Loy Lee 'Skip' Shipper

Jamestown resident Loy Lee "Skip" Shipper died Sept. 17 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 72.

Mr. Shipper was born in Houston, Texas, to Loy and Mildred Shipper. He graduated from Milby High School in Houston in 1960.

He served in the U.S. Army and then moved to Sonora in 1966.

In Sonora, he met Marsha Pister and married her on Nov. 27, 1966.

Mr. Shipper worked as a volunteer fireman in Twain Harte and Jamestown and as a Tuolumne County Sheriff's Reserve volunteer. He also worked for Pacific Bell as a lineman for 33 years. He retired in 1997.

Mr. Shipper was an active member of the Sonora Moose Lodge and Sportsman Club.

Mr. Shipper was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Mary Shipper.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marsha Shipper, of Jamestown; his children and their spouses, Marcy and Roy Woods, of Jamestown, and Dusty and Tiffany Shipper, of Peoria, Ariz.; grandchildren, Chris and Samantha Salyers, of Jamestown, Wyatt and Chanen Shipper, of Arizona, and Hannah Woods and Tawnie Quillen, of Twain Harte; one great-granddaughter; his brothers, Lawrence Martin, of Alabama, and Larry Shipper, of Sonora; his sisters, Carolyn, Susie and Debbie, of Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Moose Lodge, 20921 Longeway Road, Sonora.

Priscilla Marion Quintel

Dec. 23, 1923 - Sept. 13, 2013

Sonora resident Priscilla Marion Quintel, 89, of Sonora, died Sept. 13 at Meadowview Manor in Sonora. She was 89.

Mrs. Quintel was born in Gloucester, Mass., and moved as a young woman to Alameda, where she met and married her husband.

She trained in nursing In the 1940s, then in the early 1950s taught herself office administration skills. She advanced to work as an executive secretary to the vice president of Fireman's Fund Insurance Co.

After retirement, she enjoyed being a homemaker, studying the Christian faith and painting primitives. In 1978, she and her husband moved from the Bay Area to Sonora.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joseph R. Quintel, of Sonora; daughters Sharon E. and Douglas L. Miller, of Helena, Mont., Carole A. Quintel, of Castro Valley; and a granddaughter, Erin Irizarry of Chico.

Cremation has taken place. Interment will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

At her request, no memorial services are planned.

RUTHERFORD - Robert E. Rutherford, 85, of Strawberry, died Sept. 9 in a logging accident in Modesto. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 24176 Pine Lake Drive, Sugar Pine. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the church, P.O.
