Marla Lynn

(Nelson) Hallen

Sonora resident Marla Lynn (Nelson) Hallen died July 31 at a hospital in Pleasanton. She was 64.

Mrs. Hallen was born Marla Lynn Nelson in Oakland to Gordon and Arlene Nelson.

She was raised with a knowledge of the outdoors and learned to hunt and fish. She was a skilled markswoman.

She graduated from Granada High School in Livermore in 1966.

She worked various jobs including at the Livermore Veterans Association, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

She met and married Bill Hallen in 1976.

She and her husband had lived in Sonora part-time since 1991.

Mrs. Hallen enjoyed softball, bowling, gardening, music and casinos, according to her family.

Mrs. Hallen was preceded in death by her father in 1964 and mother in 1993.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Hallen, of Sonora; children, James Hallen, of Tracy, Bobbi Burns, of Fremont, Kelly Hallen, of Tracy, Judie Nelson, of Tracy, and Cheré Demont, of Tracy; her brother, Gary Nelson, of Livermore; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Patsy Ruth

(Miller) James

March 17, 1942 - Aug. 19, 2013

Tuolumne resident Patsy Ruth (Miller) James died Monday in Fortuna. She was 71.

Mrs. James was born Patsy Ruth Miller in Los Angeles to Elbert and Elvira 'Ellen' Miller.

After World War II, her family settled in Tuolumne County when she a young girl.

She married Charles James on June 29, 1960, at Tuolumne Methodist Church.

Mrs. James was a member of the Jamestown United Methodist Church and Tuolumne County Horseshoe Club. She enjoyed traveling to horseshoe tournaments, camping sewing, reading, quilting and collecting angel figurines. She also enjoyed cooking, especially making tortillas.

Mrs. James was preceded in death by her father, Elbert Miller, in 1983; and her sister, Shirley Miller, in 1948.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Charles James, of Tuolumne; her mother, Elvira "Ellen" Miller, of Tuolumne; her children and their spouses, Kathleen and Vern Garrett, of Gillette, Wyo., Cindy and Bob Rhorer, of Tuolumne, Mel and Paula James, of Gillette, Angela and Mark Geist, of Mount Shasta, Randy and Sarah James, of Tuolumne, Elbert and Sandra James, of Columbia, Chuck P. James, of Tuolumne, Dennis and Scarlet James, of Sonora, and Kimberly Studebaker, of Spokane Valley, Wash., sister, Geraldine Miller, of Sonora; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Heuton Memorial Chapel, 400 S. Stewart St., Sonora. A visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Tuolumne United Methodist Church, 18851 Cedar St., with a service after. A burial will follow at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne.

Ann O'Connor

Dec. 21, 1952 - Aug. 4, 2013

Frequent Twain Harte visitor Ann O'Connor, of Lodi, died Aug. 4 at her home. She was 60.

She was born in San Leandro to Thomas and Mildred O'Connor.

Her father died when she was a young girl. Her mother met and married August Hunte, who raised her and was like a father to her.

She enjoyed knitting, quilting, reading and traveling, especially to the Twain Harte area.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas O'Connor; mother, Mildred Hunte, stepfather, August Hunte; and her sister, Marleen Friedlander.

She is is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Hetty Booth, of Twain Harte; three grandchildren, Rylie, Avery and Silas Booth, all of Twain Harte; brothers and their spouses, Larry and Monica O'Connor, of Sacramento, and Steve Hunte and Alicia Woodring, of the Bay Area; three nieces, Nicole Dalton, of Las Vegas, Amy Friedlander, of Las Vegas, and Allison Nightingale, of Sacramento; and two great-nephews.

A celebration of life will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at a cabin in Twain Harte.

John Vincent Piazza

Oct. 30, 1950 - Aug. 13, 2013

Sonora resident John Vincent Piazza died Aug. 13 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 62.

Mr. Piazza was born in El Cerrito to Augustus John and June G. Piazza.

He worked as a glazier in the Bay Area for a number of years.

He settled in Sonora 10 years ago.

Mr. Piazza enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and the outdoors. He was a member of E. Clampus Vitus Matuca Chapter 1849. He also volunteered with Rose Wolf Wildlife Rescue.

Mr. Piazza was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise Piazza, in 2002; and sister, Ruth Piazza.

He is survived by his companion of 11 years and wife of two years, Constance L. Shields, of Sonora; children, Bobbi Jo and Jay McNabb, of Rio Vista, JoLynn Piazza, of Bay Point, and Victoria Fairchild, of Bay Point; and seven grandchildren.

A private family service will be held Saturday in Bay Point. The Clampers will hold a celebration of life at 4 p.m. Saturday at the St. Charles Saloon, 22801 Main St.
