Beverly Ann Cooper

Dec. 7, 1933 - July 30, 2013

Sonora resident Beverly Ann Cooper died July 30 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. She was 79.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Arkansas to Frank and Jessie Brown.

She moved to California with her family during the 1930s Dust Bowl period to look for better opportunities.

She moved to Sonora about 35 years ago and she and her husband, Gene Cooper, owned and operated a bakery in Columbia for about 20 years.

Mrs. Cooper was known as "the coffee cart lady" at Chicken Ranch Casino in Jamestown for bringing coffee to casino-goers.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and creating ceramics.

Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by all three sisters and her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Gene Cooper, of Sonora; children, Sheila Brown, of Sonora, Sharon Clayton, of Valley Springs, Sonia Backer, of Minnesota, and Dennis Campbell, of Oregon; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 17 at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora.

John Phillips Gill

June 3, 1932 - July 21, 2013

Sonora resident John Phillips Gill died July 21 at his home. He was 81.

Mr. Gill was born in Mason City, Iowa, to Bertha and Jack Gill. He grew up in Wisconsin.

Mr. Gill served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator from 1952 to 1956.

After his military service, he settled in California to be closer to his parents.

He met Dolores Fevegney while working at an electronic plant in 1956. They wed in Santa Barbara in 1958.

He worked as an aeronautics engineer for 30 years in the Bay Area. He also worked in the aero-astro department at Stanford University for 18 years. During that time, he lived in Big Trees with his wife.

Mr. Gill moved to Sonora one year ago, where he worked at Stewart Audio and fixed amplifiers.

He had many varied interests but especially enjoyed macramé, craftwork, building and inventing.

Mr. Gill was preceded in death by parents and his younger brother, Charles Gill.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dolores Gill, of Sonora; and three daughters, Kathy Gill, of Pescadero, Julie Gill, of Santa Cruz, and Karen Gill, of Arnold; siblings, Phyllis Nelson, of Sanger, and Edward Gill, of Southern California; and grandson, John Gill.

No services are planned. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Theresa Rose 'Teri' Schappek

July 16, 1963 - July 27, 2013

Sonora and Columbia resident Theresa "Teri" Rose Schappek died July 27 in Pleasanton. She was 50.

Mrs. Schappek was born in Van Nuys to Joan and Paul Schappek.

She spent most of her childhood in Tuolumne County from 1974 to 1984, graduating from Sonora High School and Columbia College with an associate's degree in business.

She then received a bachelor's degree in business from California State University, Sacramento.

Mrs. Schappek worked as a tourism editor for The American Automobile Association in Pleasanton for 15 years, representing numerous towns and cities the Mother Lode, parts of the Central Valley and Monterey County.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora and St. Augustine Catholic Church in Pleasanton.

She enjoyed cross-stitching and crocheting.

Mrs. Schappek was preceded in death by her father in 2008.

She is survived by her mother, Joan Schappek, of Angels Camp; sister, Laura Vaughan, of Sonora; nieces, Alyssa Jones, of Sonora, Megan Giesbrecht, of Coronado, and Kailyn Vaughan, of Sonora; nephew, Evan Vaughan, of Sonora; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, in Sonora.

Anne Edna (Huber) Schnarr

Feb. 9, 1928 - Aug. 2, 2013

Sonora resident Anne Edna (Huber) Schnarr died Aug. 2 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. She was 85.

Mrs. Schnarr was born in Bamberg, Canada, to Simon and Anna Huber. She moved with her family to California in 1964 for better weather.

She raised her children in Riverside in Southern California and worked at Monroe Elementary School in the cafeteria for about 12 years. She also worked for Cal Fire as a fire lookout at Deadwood Peak for 3 years.

Mrs. Schnarr moved to Sonora 13 years ago to be with family.

She volunteered with Interfaith Community Social Services and Christmas Partners in Sonora.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Schnarr enjoyed reading and playing shuffleboard.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Schnarr, in 1958.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Reuben Schnarr, of Sonora; children and their spouses, Gail and Gary Gilbert, of North Fork, Michael and Paula Schnarr, of Sonora, Mary and Steve Grambusch, of Placerville, Denise and John Gemma, of San Clemente, and Jeff and Denise Schnarr, of San Clemente; grandchildren, Tara Schnarr-Rojo, of Sacramento, Tiffany Johnson, of Redding, Matthew Gilbert, of Sonora, Erin Gilbert, of North Fork, Sara Grambusch, of Placerville, Marina Gemma, of San Clemente, Dylan Gemma, of San Clemente, and Bryson Schnarr, of San Clemente; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and sisters, Rita Schnarr and Gertrude Huber, both of Canada.

Services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora.

PACIER - Eileen Pacier, 66, of Groveland, died July 30 at her home. A celebration of life will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Yosemite Vista Estates Community Center, 22645 Prospect Heights, Groveland. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
