Henry Louis 'Hank' Matthews

Nov. 23, 1931 - July 19, 2013

Coulterville resident Henry Louis "Hank" Matthews died Friday at Sonora Regional Medical Center's long term care unit. He was 81.

Mr. Matthews was born in Arkansas to Jack and Vila Mae Matthews.

He married Antoinette Maffei in February 1956 in Reno, Nev.

He worked as a line inspector for the American National Can Co. in San Leandro for 35 years until retiring to Coulterville in 1992. He settled in Sonora in October 2012.

He enjoyed fishing and gambling in Reno and Lake Tahoe.

Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife, Antoinette Matthews, in 2004; his parents; Jack and Vila Mae Matthews; and sister, Jackie Austin, in 2012.

He is survived by his children, Robin Ann Impastato, of Antioch, and Gary Louis Matthews, of Livermore; grandchildren, Shawn Henry Curry, of Antioch, Adam Scott Curry, of Antioch, Jessica Nicole Matthews, of Livermore, and Garrett Louis Matthews, stationed at Fort Benning, Ga.; and siblings, John Matthews, of Ripon, and Frances Munsell, of Sonora.

A graveside service was planned for 11 a.m. today at Lone Tree Cemetery, 24591 Fairview Ave., Hayward.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Caryl La Faye (Jack) Farrer

June 24, 1957 - July 14, 2013

Columbia resident Caryl La Faye (Jack) Farrer died of an illness on July 14 at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. She was 56.

Ms. Farrer was born Caryl La Faye Jack in San Jose to Elsie and Orville Llewellyn Jack.

She graduated from Milpitas High School and was named Miss Milpitas in the mid-1970s.

She toured Europe for a time and worked as a fashion model, mostly in Milan, Italy, and Paris, France.

She earned a master's degree in botanical illustration from California State University, Stanislaus, in 1992.

She moved from Turlock to Columbia in the 1990s to work at Columbia State Historic Park. She also worked as a seasonal employee for the U.S. Forest Service. Later, she was unable to work due to disability.

Ms. Farrer was an artist and horticulturalist and specialized in botanical illustration and Native American plant usage.

She practiced watercolor, printmaking, bead and feather work and pen and ink drawing.

She enjoyed thrift store shopping, riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and driving sports cars.

Ms. Farrer was preceded in death by her son, Aaryn Isaish; her mother, Louise Jack; her brother, Daryl Jack; and her grandparents, Orville and La Faye Jack and Fred and Clara Petersen.

She is survived by her fiance, Larry Hall, of Columbia; her father, Orville Jack, of San Jose; her daughter, Honey B. Vanderweil, of Columbia; grandchildren, Starshine, Himmler, Bella, and Lily, all of Columbia; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the humane societies of Tuolumne or Calaveras counties, P.O. Box 830, Jamestown, CA 95327 or P.O. Box 2065, San Andreas, CA 95249.

A memorial service will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Faith Hall, First Presbyterian Church of the 49ers, 11155 Jackson St., Columbia.

San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

KUHARICH - Former Sonora resident Genevieve "Genny" Kuharich, 95, died Sunday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

SALLUCE - Former Tuolumne County resident Dominic N. Salluce, 66, of Modesto, died Sunday. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and a Rosary from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Franklin and Downs Funeral Home, 1050 McHenry Ave., Modesto. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Church, 4212 Dale Road, Modesto; burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 2200 E 18th St., Antioch.

WALKER - Frank E. Walker, 94, of Sonora, died Monday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
