Jeanne Marie Cowper

Feb. 7, 1924 - June 11, 2013

La Grange resident Jeanne Marie Cowper died Tuesday at her home. She was 89.

Mrs. Cowper was born in Los Angeles to Paul and Cleo Sullivan.

She retired to La Grange from Balboa Island in 1977.

Mrs. Cowper was an artist for most her life and enjoyed watercolors, wall paper design and cartooning. She later focused on oil painting.

She was preceded in death by her older sister, Dolly Tukey, in 1992.

She is survived by a son, Etienne Cowper, of Temecula; and brother, Paul Sullivan, of Sammamish, Wash.

No services are planned.

The Neptune Society of Central California is handling arrangements.

George Edward Holman

Dec. 15, 1933 - June 8, 2013

Sonora resident George Holman died Saturday at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto. He was 79.

Mr. Holman was born in Oakdale, the youngest of 10 children to Clarence and Clarissa Holman.

His mother was hospitalized due to illness while he was an infant so he was cared for by his older siblings.

He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1952, where he participated in athletics, especially wrestling.

Mr. Holman met Mary Lou Risoen in 1955 and they married on June 7, 1957, in Carson City, Nev.

He worked for Standard Oil Co. in Richmond before he was drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1957. After two years in the service, he returned to Richmond and his job with Standard.

He and his family moved to Columbia in 1967 after he completed barber school.

He owned and operated the 49er Barber Shop in downtown Sonora until he retired in June 1991, in need of a heart transplant, which he received in December 1991.

He enjoyed water and snow skiing, boating, camping, fishing, horseback riding and swimming as a young man. He also enjoyed traveling, motorcycle riding, taking cruises, wildlife, nature, sports and politics.

Mr. Holman was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Holman, in 2009; sons, Tom and Ron Holman, both in 1999; son-in-law, Martin Hedges, in 2010; and siblings, Dean, Kal, Evelyn, Lois, Clarice and Mary Jane Holman.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Kathy and Ray Holm, of Jamestown, Lisa Hedges, of Sonora, and Pete Holman, of Susanville; his grandchildren and their spouses, Reyann (Holm) and Aaron Winters, of Elko, Nev., Seth and Melissa Holm, of Sonora, Sarah Holm, of Sonora, Michelle (West) and Kris Keezer, of Sonora, Ryan and Courtney West, of Sonora, Jessica (Hedges) and Warren Whited, of Sonora, K.C. and Kristen Hedges, of Killeen, Texas, Ashley and Tanner Holman, of Modesto, Bobbie Jo Holman, of Susanville, and Sabrina, Sherri and Ronnie Holman, of Oakdale; siblings, Merle Holman, of Jamestown, Harold Holman, of Copperopolis, and Ruth Steelman, of Concord; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at his home in Sonora.

A private family burial will be held at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Logan Joshua Myers

Jan. 28, 1996 - May 31, 2013

Jamestown resident Logan Joshua Myers died May 31 at his home. He was 17.

Mr. Myers was born in Sonora to John and Heather Myers. He graduated from Columbia Elementary School in 2010 and was a junior at Sonora High School.

He enjoyed working on cars with his grandfather, camping, hiking, video games, computers, the Internet and animals.

He is survived by his mother, Heather Myers, of La Grange; his father, John Myers, of Jamestown; his grandparents, David and Lavonia Bowyer, of Jamestown; siblings, M.J. Myers, of La Grange, and Elizabeth Myers, of Jamestown; cousin, Morgann McIntosh, of Sonora; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 29 at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. He will be inurned at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

WHITSED - A memorial service for Norman Whitsed, 77, of Copperopolis, who died Sunday at his home, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 13880 Joshua Way, Sonora, followed by a reception. A celebration of life at the Sonora Elks Lodge will be held at a later date. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
