Robert Alan 'Bob' Slater

Sept. 26, 1930 - May 3, 2013

Jamestown resident Robert Alan "Bob" Slater died May 3 at his home. He was 82.

Mr. Slater was born in South Royalton, Vt., to Robert and Irene Slater, who owned Wagon Wheels farm.

He attended the University of Vermont. There, he earned a Golden Glove in 1950.

He then joined the U.S. Army in 1952 and trained as a ranger. He was a first-string tackle for the Army football team.

He was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1954.

He met his future wife, Thelma, that same year. He and Thelma married and moved West, working as they went. They settled in Jamestown in 1960, where they raised their children Bobby and Debbie.

Mr. Slater worked as a heavy equipment operator, first for government projects. He later owned his own company for 30-plus years.

He led his son's Boy Scout troop and participated with his daughter in the Rainbow Girls.

Mr. Slater enjoyed the Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee and was an "anchor" on the Tuolumne tug-of-war team.

He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Angels Gun Club in Angels Camp. He won the "21 Yard Handicap Final" at the Amateur Trapshooting Association Western Zone Shoot in 2001.

He enjoyed hunting, shooting and raising his hunting dogs. In retirement, Mr. Slater went on two African safaris.

Mr. Slater was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Irene Slater; and an infant sister, Sylvia Slater.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Slater, of Jamestown; his children and their spouses, Bob and Barbara Slater, of Soulsbyville, and Debbie and Phil Tomasevich, of Sugar Pine; his grandchildren and their spouses, Heather and Jon Knudson of, Dayton, Nev., Bob and Maegan Slater, of Jamestown, Brandi and Kevin Axtell, of Ponderosa Hills, and Adam Tomasevich, of Jamestown; and five great-grandsons.

A celebration of life potluck will be held at 11 a.m. June 9 at the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse grounds.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Glenette Carolyn Fairfield

June 12, 1937 - May 15, 2013

Former Sugar Pine resident Glenette Carolynn Fairfield, 75, of Gardnerville, Nev., died May 15 at Carson Valley Senior Living due to complications from a stroke.

Ms. Fairfield was born in Wallace, Idaho. The family moved to Concord as a young girl.

She worked as an elementary school teacher for 35 years. She taught in Sacramento and Modesto and spent 24 years with the Evergreen School District in San Jose. She also taught at U.S. military schools for eight years in Turkey, Holland, Spain and Pakistan.

Ms. Fairfield was a member of the National Education Association, the California Teachers Association and the Evergreen Teachers Association.

She had a cabin built in Sugar Pine in 1972 and enjoyed spending several months each year in the area.

She retired from teaching in 1994 and moved to Gardnerville.

She enjoyed reading and traveling. She participated in many Elderhostel programs.

Ms. Fairchild is survived by her sisters, Beverly Davidson, of Illinois, and Susan Brunelle and her husband, Paul, of Gardnerville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette.

Moore's Mission Funeral Home in Concord handled the arrangements.


BARTNEK - Paul Henry Bartnek, 85, of Sonora, died May 12 at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. Services have been held. Trident Society in Palo Alto handled arrangements.

McDANIEL - Robert Lee McDaniel, 79, of Jamestown, died Thursday at his home in Jamestown. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
