John Allen Burita

Jan. 8, 1945 - May 1, 2013

Arnold resident John Allen Burita died May 1 at his home. He was 68.

Mr. Burita was born in Chicago to John Albert Burita and Mary Francis Burita.

He graduated from Downers Grove High School, just outside Chicago, and attended Northern Illinois University.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965, and served as an aircraft mechanic in Vietnam.

Mr. Burita moved to California after his discharge, met his future wife, Susan Morton, and lived in Santa Cruz until 1977, when the family moved to Arnold.

He worked as a coach, aide and maintenance worker at Vallecito Union School District.

Mr. Burita was a minister who officiated many local weddings for free.

He enjoyed fishing, hiking and traveling.

Mr. Burita is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan Burita, of Arnold; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Victoria Burita, of Avery; grandsons, Ian, Eliot and Brody Burita, of Avery; brother, William "Bill" Burita, of Oakhurst; and numerous extended family members.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hazel Fischer School, 1605 Blagen Road, Arnold.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Elizabeth J. (Dertil) Durichek

May 9, 1919 - April 24, 2013

Sonora resident Elizabeth J. (Dertil) Durichek died April 24 at Sonora Regional Medical Center Unit 6. She was 93.

Mrs. Durichek was born in Chicago, Ill., to George and Mary Dertil.

She worked as the dean of women at Hinsdale Sanitarium Nursing School in Hinsdale, Ill.

Mrs. Durichek moved to Sonora more than 10 years ago to be with family.

Mrs. Durichek was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Durichek; parents; a daughter, Judy Hancock; and a grandson, Jeremy Hancock.

She is survived by her grandchildren, John Hancock, of Glendive, Mont., Jared Hancock, of Riverbank, and Jason Hancock, of Sparks, Nev.; son-in-law, James Hancock; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Seventh-day Adventist Church, 40 N. Forest Road, Sonora.

Elizabeth Joy Hughes

April 20, 1959 - May 5, 2013

Sonora resident Elizabeth Hughes died Sunday at her home. She was 54.

Ms. Hughes was born in Oakland to Janet (Hogarth) and Robert Hughes.

She moved from Lafayette to Sonora five years ago with her family to enjoy mountain life.

Ms. Hughes was a client of the WATCH program.

She enjoyed dancing, swimming, art and travel.

Ms. Hughes was preceded in death by her father, Robert L. Hughes; and brother, Robert J. Hughes.

She is survived by her mother, Janet Hughes, of Sonora; brother, Matthew Hughes, of Hot Springs, S.D.; and sisters, Terry Storey, of Sonora, Kaye Marchal, of Grants Pass, Ore., Margaret Koenig, of Pleasanton, and Virginia Benguerel, of Modesto.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 24176 Pine Lake Drive, Sugar Pine.

Patrick Steven Rowe

Nov. 18, 1986 - April 27, 2013

Murphys resident Patrick Rowe died of a sudden medical emergency April 27 at his home. He was 26.

Mr. Rowe was born and raised in Angels Camp to David and Wrenae Rowe.

He graduated from Bret Harte High School in 2005 and attended college for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He served two tours in Afghanistan with the 1st Marine Division. He received a Bronze Star for heroic achievement during his first deployment, and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Rowe was pursuing a career in counseling fellow veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder, after moving to Murphys from San Diego in September.

He enjoyed fishing, hiking with his dogs, caring for his flock of chickens, reading and studying history.

Mr. Rowe is survived by his wife of two years, Kate Rowe, of Murphys; parents, David and Wrenae Rowe, of Angels Camp; brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Sophia Rowe, of Woodland; grandmother, Letty Rowe, of Arnold; and numerous extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday near Jack Knight Hall at Big Trees State Park, 1170 Highway 4, Arnold.

John Robert Spangler

Oct. 13, 1941 - May 4, 2013

Angels Camp resident John Robert Spangler died Saturday at his home. He was 71.

Mr. Spangler was born in Indiana to Floyd and Virginia Spangler. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colo.

He worked as a fabricator and business owner in Monterey County.

Mr. Spangler moved to Angels Camp about 12 years ago to be with family.

He enjoyed fishing and gambling.

Mr. Spangler is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jane Spangler, of Angels Camp; children, Chris Spangler and Cheryl Goodger, both of Grand Junction, Desiree Waddell, of Spokane, Wash., and Carmie Sanchez, of Murphys; sister, Mary Sissom, of Clifton, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at 101 Tune Way, Angels Camp.

James Michael 'Jim' Tracy Sr.

Oct. 30, 1962 - April 16, 2013

Sonora resident James Michael 'Jim' Tracy Sr. died April 16 at his home. He was 50.

Mr. Tracy was born in Santa Cruz to Coyle Tracy III and Dianne Charlene Tracy. He grew up in Tuolumne.

He worked as an arborist most of his life, climbing and trimming trees. He also worked for 16 years at Flaton's Rustic Shop, a furniture store in Sonora.

He enjoyed making furniture, collecting signs and working on his 1969 Dodge Super Bee.

Mr. Tracy was preceded in death by his mother, Dianne Charlene Tracy, in 1984.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Donna E. Tracy; father and stepmother, Coyle and Alice Tracy; and sons, James Michael "Jimmy" Tracy Jr. and Timothy Joshua Tracy, all of Sonora; grandson, Dominik Shepard, of Sonora; and siblings, William John "Billy" Tracy, of Sonora, Gary Robert Tracy, of Tracy, and Coyle John "CJ" Tracy, of Sonora; and brother-in-law, Brian Beaty, of Sonora.

A celebration of life was held.

GALVAN - Christopher Stephen Galvan, 66, of Valley Springs, died April 29 at his home. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

KEENEY - A celebration of life for Troy Ellen Keeney, 53, of San Andreas, who died March 19 in San Andreas, will be held at 11 a.m. May 16 at San Andreas Community Covenant Church, 261 Treat Ave., San Andreas. A reception will follow at 520 Terrace View Court, San Andreas. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

ROYSE - A memorial service for Roberta May Royse, 84, of Sonora, who died Monday at her home, will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Church of Christ, 14054 Tuolumne Road, Sonora.
