Loredana Maria Pessler

Dec. 1, 1926 - April 1, 2013

Sonora resident Loredana Pessler died Monday at her home. She was 86.

She was born in Trieste, Italy, to Marcello Pessi and Iolanda (Russich) Pessi.

She experienced the occupation of her city in World War II by Germans, British, New Zealanders and Americans until 1954. That year, she married Gene Hovatter, an American soldier, and moved to the United States.

They lived in Seattle, Wash., San Francisco, Costa Mesa and, finally, Sonora. She was a homemaker, and also worked briefly as a real estate agent, saleswoman and Italian teacher.

When she and her husband split, she changed her name to Pessler. It was her family's original surname but it was changed when Italian dictator Benito Mussolini decreed that German-sounding last names be changed to sound Italian.

Mrs. Pessler enjoyed crossword puzzles, discussing world events, and teaching Italian.

She is survived by sons, Kurt von Pessler, of Warm Beach, Wash., and Eric Hovatter, of Sonora; and grandchildren, Kate and Joshua Hovatter, of Sonora; and ex-husband, Gene Hovatter, of Irvine.

No services will be held.
