Clark Robert Burton

Murphys resident Dr. Clark Burton died March 2 in San Andreas. He was 90.
Dr. Burton was born in Berkeley and raised in Concord. A member of the first Cub Scout pack in the U.S., he went on to become an Eagle Scout and a Sea Scout.
He studied chemistry at University of California, Berkeley. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corp in 1943 and his group went to basic training and came back as Army students living on the campus. He served in World War II as a navigator on a B-24 and later a B-29 for the Army Air Corps.
When the war ended, he returned to University of California, Berkeley, to complete his chemistry degree. Dr. Burton was vacationing at the Cal ski lodge at Lake Tahoe, where he met Carol Guild. They graduated and married in 1947.
He was hired by Shell Chemical in Martinez as a chemist, where he worked for seven years. He then acquired his doctorate in dental surgery from University of California, San Francisco, in 1958.
Dr. Burton moved his family to Calaveras County to start his dental practice. The first location of his practice was in Altaville, and he later moved to Murphys. He retired in 1986.
He enjoyed skiing, winemaking, bicycle touring, dancing and many outdoor family activities. He was a charter member of the Bear Valley Ski Club and participated in many National Standard Race ski races.
Dr. Burton was a past president of the San Joaquin Dental Society and was a volunteer dentist in the Marshall Islands, Mexico and Nepal.
Dr. Burton was preceded in death by his son, Tom Burton; and his brother, Willard Burton.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol Burton, of Murphys; daughters and son-in-law, Nancy Burton, of Angels Camp, and Laurie and Brent Corson, of Sonora; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Eva Burton, of Arnold; and grandchildren, Isis Whitehead, of Sonora, and Christian Corson, of Sonora.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 13 at the First Congregational Church, Church and Algiers streets, Murphys. A reception will follow at Murphys Diggins Clubhouse, 216 Tom Bell Road.

Lorie Christine Muma
Dec. 8, 1965 - March 11, 2013
Lorie Christine Muma, formerly of Valley Springs, died March 11 in a Sacramento train accident. She was 47.
Mrs. Muma was born in Stockton to Clarence and Carol Muma.
She worked and lived off-and-on in Sacramento and Valley Springs. She held several jobs over the years in Calaveras County at Lake Pardee, Subway, Calaveras Linen and the Calaveras Enterprise. She worked at Reserve America and most recently at MSI Mailing Systems in Rancho Cordova.
She enjoyed puzzles, bingo, gardening, painting and riding bikes.
Mrs. Muma was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her children and a daughter-in-law, Christopher and Rachelle Fowler, of Lodi, Vanessa Fowler, of Roseville, Roselea Cardoza, of Santa Cruz, and Jesse Cardoza, of Santa Cruz; brothers, Timothy Muma and Daniel Muma, both of Stockton;
sisters and a brother-in-law, Jeanette and Jim Lay, of Valley Springs, and Elizabeth Dias, of Fremont; grandchildren, Damian and Gabriella Gonzales, both of Roseville, Nevaeh Pacheco, of Santa Cruz, and Breanna Aylor, of Lodi.
A funeral service will be held at noon Friday at San Andreas Memorial Chapel, 254 W. St. Charles St. A graveside service will follow at Independence Cemetery, 597 Ridge Road, Mokelumne Hill.

Peggy Sue (Brown) Warren
Nov. 29, 1934 - March 11, 2013
Peggy Sue Warren, formerly of Sonora, died March 11 at her Ontario home. She was 78.
Mrs. Warren was born in Forester, Ark.
She lived in Sonora from 1943 to 1968, and worked as a banker and homemaker. She moved to Ontario 44 years ago.
Mrs. Warren was a former president of the Sonora Emblem Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Dean Warren, in 2001.
Mrs. Warren is survived by children and their spouses, Richard and Jane Warren, of Fontana, Randy and Diane Warren, of Las Vegas, Nev., Renee and Rob Templeton, of Columbus, Ohio, Rusty and Vicki Warren, of Victorville, and Robyn Sconyers, of Ontario; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. March 27 at Todd Memorial Chapel, 570 N. Garey Ave., Pomona, and 2 p.m. March 29 at St. James Anglican Church, 42 Snell St., Sonora. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.
