Karen Jo (Dewey) Cantu

March 28, 1955 - Feb. 22, 2013

Sonora resident Karen Cantu died Feb. 22 at her home. She was 57.

Mrs. Cantu was born in Humboldt to Hap and Faye Dewey.

She moved to Sonora 25 years ago and raised her daughter in the area. She worked as a medical assistant for several local doctors' offices and then Sonora Regional Medical Center for the past 15 years.

She enjoyed horseback riding, kayaking and riding her Harley-Davidson motorcycle. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. Cantu was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Jim Dewey and Calvin Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Tasha Mendes, of Sonora; her sister, Linda Taylor, of Cottonwood; brother, Stan Dewey, of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. March 23 at at the Church of Christ, 14054 Tuolumne Road, Sonora.

Robert 'Bob' Charles Marion

March 17, 1931 - Feb. 25, 2013

Soulsbyville resident Robert Marion died Feb. 25 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. He was 81.

Mr. Marion was born in Elkton, Md., to Louis and Della Catherine (Fox) Marion.

He served in the U.S. Army, 3rd Division, 65th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion and was discharged as a staff sergeant and a veteran of the Korean War.

He moved to California in 1955 and lived first in the Bay Area, and then Soulsbyville for the last 25 years.

Mr. Marion worked at the Santa Clara Paper Mill and then as a contractor in Tuolumne County.

He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, playing golf and going to the casino.

Mr. Marion was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty Tachiera and brothers Johnny, Tom and Harry Marion.

He is survived by wife of 57 years, Enis C. (Armario) Marion; brothers, Louis J. Marion Jr., of Tuolumne, and Ronald A. Marion, of Hilo, Hawaii; his sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

A reception will be held noon Sunday at Woods Creek Mobile Home Park clubhouse, 18725 Highway 108, Jamestown.

He was interred at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sonora.

Donald Edward Moroney

March 4, 1936 - Feb. 17, 2013

Former Sonora resident Donald Moroney died Feb. 17 at the Monarch Center in Saco, Maine. He was 76.

Mr. Moroney was born in Detroit, Mich., to Clarence and Agnes (Paulson) Moroney. He graduated from Grosse Point High School in 1954.

He was a clerk for San Francisco General Hospital for 24 years and retired in 1991. He moved to Sonora a few years later.

Mr. Moroney volunteered at the Tuolumne County Senior Center in Sonora and attended the Unity Spiritual Center.

He enjoyed animals, and adopted and cared for local stray cats.

Mr. Moroney was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Daniel P. Moroney, and his partner of over 25 years, James E. Dollard.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Harriet G. Moroney, of Windham, Maine; a niece, Jennie L. (Moroney) Butler and her husband, Brian, of Windham; his nephew, Allen H. Moroney and his wife, Michelle, of West Bath, Maine; and his nephew, Patrick D. Moroney, and his wife, Rosemary Thorne, of Fairborn, Ohio.

Private family services will be held.

BIRD - A memorial service for Lurline Bird, 103, of Sonora, who died March 11 at Casa Viejos Assisted Living in Jamestown, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. EDENS - Visitation for Sherman Ray Edens, 66, of Tuolumne, who died Tuesday at his home, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

FERRO - A funeral Mass for Gerald Ferro, 81, formerly of Twain Harte, who died March 8 at his Oakdale home, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church, 18674 Cherokee Drive, Twain Harte. The time printed in Wednesday's death notices was incorrect.

GONZALES - Jose Gonzales, 90, of Copperopolis, died March 11 at his home. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Angels Memorial Chapel, 1071 S. Main St., Angels Camp, which is handling arrangements.

HANSON - Merilyn Dorothy Hanson, 67, of Sonora, died Dec. 12 at Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto. A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. March 24 at the Willow Springs Clubhouse, 20522 Willow Springs Drive, Soulsbyville.

RYAN - Margaret Ryan, 70, of Sonora, died Wednesday at Country Lane Estates in Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

WOLCOTT - Robert Wolcott, 63, of Sonora, died Tuesday at his home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
