Raymond Fredrick Bird

Jan. 16, 1948 - Feb. 10, 2013

Murphys resident Raymond Bird died on Feb.10 at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. He was 65.

Mr. Bird was born in Myrtle Creek, Ore., to Owen and Clara (Pratt) Bird. He moved with his family to New Plymouth, Idaho, Lebec, Pomona and Greeley Hill, among other places. He graduated from Mariposa High School in 1966.

He married Lynne Cross in 1990 in South Lake Tahoe. He had lived in Murphys since that time.

Mr. Bird was a career firefighter who worked 30 years with the U.S. Forest Service. For most of those 30 years, he was fire captain of the Dorrington Fire Station. He also worked for a couple of years with the California Division of Forestry prior to his Forest Service career.

Mr. Bird retired from the Forest Service in 1998. After, he worked at Bear Valley Ski Area for 10 years where he kept the parking lot clear and ensured the buses ran on time.

He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, listening to audiobooks and working in the yard.

Mr. Bird was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lisa Bird; his brother, Martin Bird; and sisters, Lavada Partch, Nancy Thompson and Joy Rumph.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Lynne Bird, of Murphys; children, Landon Bird, of Copperopolis, Loren Bird, of Jamestown, and Traci Bird, of Copperopolis; a daughter-in-law, Carey Bird, of Copperopolis; grandchildren, Jordan Bird, Mack Bird, and Quincy Bird, all of Copperopolis; brothers, Michael Bird, of Sonora, and Calvin Bird, of Thailand; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 1:30 p.m. March 23 at the Masonic Hall, 384 Church Street, Murphys. A potluck will follow.

Louella (Ray) Lowe

April 30, 1920 - March 6, 2013

Groveland resident Luella Lowe died Wednesday at Pacifica Senior Living in Modesto. she was 92.

Mrs. Lowe was born near Ridgeway, Va. She moved to California in 1951.

She worked in manufacturing as a seamstress for 45 years throughout California, mostly in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas.

Mrs. Lowe moved to Groveland in 2011 to be with family.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Big Oak Flat.

She enjoyed piano and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Lowe was preceded in death by husband, John W. Lowe.

She is survived by sons, James Lowe, of Groveland, John Lowe, of Sun Valley, Idaho, and Robert Lowe, of Boise, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesdayat Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Bakersfield, 9101 Kern Canyon Road.

Henrietta (Laer) Scholz Wolff

Nov. 4, 1922 - Feb. 17, 2013

Sonora resident Henrietta Wolff died Feb. 17 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 90.

Mrs. Wolff was born in Los Angeles to Henry and Anna Davin Laer. She lived there until moving to the Strawberry area in the 1950s. She retired to Sonora in the early 1970s.

She spent most of her life as a homemaker, working a few small jobs, including five years as a cashier at Dodge Ridge Ski Area.

Mrs. Wolff was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Whittier.

She enjoyed reading historical novels and playing poker.

Mrs. Wolff was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Walter Scholz, and second husband, Juren Wolff; a daughter, Francis Scholz, in 2003.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Walter Rene and Martha Scholz, of Sonora; sister, Margret T. Jolley, of Hacienda Heights; grandchildren, Scott Riddle, of San Jose, Laural Siders, of Modesto, Michael Robinson, of Sonora, and Sheila Taylor-Scholz, of Sacramento; and a great-grandchild.

No services are planned.

BURGESS - Lewis Burgess, 90, of Sonora, died Nov. 7 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. March 23 at the Sonora Days Inn, 160 S. Washington St. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

FERRO - Gerald Ferro, 81, formerly of Twain Harte, died Friday at his Oakdale home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

SHERRARD - Ruth Sherrard, 78, formerly of Sonora, died Dec. 17 in her Placerville home.

RATZLAFF - Charlene Ratzlaff, 77, of Jamestown, died Thursday at Oak Terrace Memory Care in Soulsbyville. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

OVERHOLTZER - Bobette "Bobbie" Overholtzer, 90, of Sonora, died Friday at Meadowview Manor of Soulsbyville. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
