Lynette (Fernandes) Conger

Former Sonora resident Lynette Conger died Jan. 15 in Tucson, Ariz. She was 79.
Mrs. Conger was born in Oahu, Hawaii, to James and Elizabeth Fernandes. She and her family moved to California after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She graduated from Sonora High School.
She worked as a telephone operator in Sonora, then moved to Tucson in the mid-1960s. She was a bank teller and manager in Tucson.
She enjoyed making jewelry and playing bingo.
Mrs. Conger was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Moana Fernandes, Patricia Grant, James "Buster" Fernandes, Richard Fernandes and Walter Fernandes; and two nephews, David and Bill Grant. Another brother, Vincent Fernandes, died Feb. 1.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard Conger, of Tucson; children, Bert Conger, Diane Hallet, and Tina Conger, all of Tucson; grandsons, Jason Conger and Nickolas Hallet, both of Tucson; one great-grandchild; and brother, Milton Fernandes, of Sonora.
Services were held in Tucson.
Denise Sheree DeCarlo
Jan. 4, 1956 - Feb. 16, 2013
Sonora resident Denise DeCarlo died Feb. 16 at her home. She was 57.
Mrs. DeCarlo was born in Los Angeles to Orville and Anita DeCarlo. She grew up in Southern California and graduated from University of California, Los Angeles.
She began her nursing career specializing in neonatology and worked in the neonatal intensive care unit for many years. She moved to Sonora 22 years ago and began working in home health. Mrs. DeCarlo became known as the baby nurse for her visits to new moms and their babies, according to family members.
She enjoyed riding horses and competing in horse shows.
Mrs. DeCarlo is survived by her husband, Carlos Martinez, of Sonora; daughters Nicole Klotz, of Copperopolis, Sheree DeCarlo, of Sonora, and Taylor DeCarlo, of Twain Harte; grandchildren, Alonnah and Davin Klotz, both of Copperopolis, Brayden DeCarlo, of Sonora, and Lukas Pacheco, of Twain Harte.
A private memorial service will be held.

Vincent James Fernandes

Former Sonora resident Vincent Fernandes died Feb. 1 in Great Falls, Mont. He was 77.
Mr. Fernandes was born in Oahu, Hawaii to James and Elizabeth Fernandes. He and his family moved to California after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He graduated from Sonora High School.
Mr. Fernandes joined in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1950s. He worked as a communications officer until retirement.
He enjoyed playing the drums and recorded several albums. He also played football in high school.
Mr. Fernandes was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, James "Buster" Fernandes, Richard Fernandes, Walter Fernandes, Lynette Conger, Patricia Grant, and Moana Fernandes; and two nephews, David and Bill Grant.
He is survived by wife, Peggy Fernandes, of Great Falls; his children and their spouses, Malia and Dean Gentry, of Hawaii, Patricia Fernandes, of Hawaii, Theresa and Alex Riviera, of Hawaii, and Patrick and Bethany Fernandes, of Montana; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Milton Fernandes, of Sonora.
Services were held in Montana.
Orval S. Hillman
July 13, 1927 - Feb. 18, 2013
Jamestown resident Orval Hillman died Feb. 18 in Sonora. He was 85.
Mr. Hillman was born in Minneapolis, Minn., to Roy E. and Leone Hillman. He was raised in Montana and met his future wife there.
Mr. Hillman was a sergeant in the 20th Infantry of the U.S. Army. He served in Korea during World War II.
After his military service, he graduated from Montana State University, where he majored in agricultural science.
He lived in Jamestown for the last 45 years and worked as an adult education teacher locally for 36 years.
Mr. Hillman was preceded in death by a son, Steven Hillman.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma G. Hillman, of Jamestown; children, Paula Hillman Fagan, of Jamestown, and Ronald Hillman, of Jamestown; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Roseanne Cox, of Canada.
Private services were held.

Dec. 12, 1947 - Feb. 19, 2013
Sonora resident Larry Proulx died Feb. 19 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 65.
Mr. Proulx was born in Minnesota to Robert and Lorraine Proulx. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam. After his service, he moved to Sacramento and attended California State University, Sacramento.
He worked in pharmaceutical sales for 28 years in Northern California.
Mr. Proulx lived in Sonora less than one year, spending the previous 15 years in Healdsburg in Sonoma County.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Humane Society.
Mr. Proulx enjoyed flying and refurbishing airplanes, and volunteering with the Humane Society.
He is survived by his wife Donna, of Sonora; brother Ed Proulx, of Sonora; two aunts, one cousin, two nieces and one nephew.
Private services will be held.
