Henry 'Hank' Egon Betz

Aug. 29, 1923 - Nov. 8, 2012

Henry "Hank" Egon Betz, of Sonora, died Nov. 8 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas. He was 89.

Mr. Betz was born in Oakland to Hilda (Maier) and Gottlob Betz.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

Mr. Betz graduated from Armstrong Business College in Berkeley in the late 1940s and worked in finance for dairy cooperatives for 40 years. He ended his career as financial vice president at Challenge Dairy, where he worked for 10 years.

He retired to Sonora with his wife of 59 years, Dorothy, because they had several friends in the area. He joined Sons In Retirement after settling in Sonora. He enjoyed woodworking, crafting and traveling to Maui with his wife.

Mr. Betz was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Viola Betz.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy "Dottie" (Bennett) Betz; sons, Douglas Betz and wife, Dianna, of Penn Valley, Gregg Betz, of Livermore, and Gary Betz, of Rocklin; and grandchildren, Tara Betz, of Campbell, Amy Betz, of San Jose, and Lindsay Betz, of Penn Valley.

No services are planned.

Neptune Society of Central California handled arrangements.

Margaret (Schmitz) Smith

Feb. 22, 1925 - Jan. 12, 2013

Margaret Smith, of Jamestown, died Jan. 12 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora.

Mrs. Smith was born in Oakland to Harry and Teresa Smith.

She worked as a secretary at Westinghouse in Sunnyvale for 40 years. She retired to Jamestown 10 years ago.

She married Raymond H. Allen, whom she later divorced.

She later married Wilbur Smith.

She was preceded in death by Raymond Allen in 1977, and Wilbur Smith; and one sister, Muriel Schmitz.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by son, Douglas Allen, of Hollister; and daughter, Cindy Rey Allen, of San Jose.

A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

KONTOS - James Kontos, 81, of Twain Harte, died Wednesday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

ROBERTSON - Jack Robertson, 94, of Sonora, died Thursday at Yuba City Care Facility. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
