Mokelumne Hill resident Clayton Chatfield died Dec. 23 at the Hospice of Amador and Calaveras counties in Jackson. He was 86.
Mr. Chatfield was born in Nevada City to Clayton and Ada (King) Chatfield.
His family settled in Calaveras County when he was a young boy so his father could work in silver mines.
Mr. Chatfield joined the U.S. Army in the early 1940s. After his service, he returned to Calaveras County where he drove logging trucks for the local cement plant and American Forest Products.
Mr. Chatfield was a past master of the Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Mary Chatfield.
He is survived by his sons, Earl Chatfield, of Orangevale, and Ray Chatfield, of Mokelumne Hill; his grandchildren, Daniel Chatfield, of Michigan, Jenny Chatfield, of Modesto, Katy Chatfield, of Sacramento, Curtis Chatfield, of Mokelumne Hill; and one great-granddaughter.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Hospice of Amador and Calaveras counties, 956 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas, CA 95249.
A graveside service was planned for noon today at Mokelumne Hill Protestant Cemetery.

James 'Tuck' DeShaies

Groveland resident James "Tuck" DeShaies died Dec. 23 at his home. He was 74.
Mr. DeShaies was born in Santa Cruz, the son of Al and Helen DeShaies. He was raised in the Oakland, Livermore and Mariposa areas and graduated from Mariposa High School in 1957.
Mr. DeShaies was a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 3 for 50 years and was employed by the City and County of San Francisco for 37 years.
In his youth, he raced motorcycles, stock cars and boats.
He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting.
Mr. DeShaies was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Elk Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Mr. Deshaies was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Drummond, and his father, Al Deshaies.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Marie DeShaies, of Groveland; his children and their spouses, Yvette DeShaies, of Chowchilla, Rebecca DeShaies, of Reno, Nev., Larry and Suzanne Moore, of Big Oak Flat, Al and Megan DeShaies, of Groveland, and Bill and Amy Rozak, of Sonora; his grandchildren, Jessie Booth, Mitchell Osborn, Leza Price, Van Carpenter, Randy Heath, Courtney DeShaies, Jay Repetto and Renee Beckett; and six great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at noon Jan. 12 in the Sierra Building at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, 220 Southgate Drive, Sonora.

MITCHELL - Rollin Mitchell, 77, of Columbia, died Dec. 29 at Hy-Lond Convalescent Hospital in Modesto. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 19481 Hillsdale Drive in East Sonora, followed by a graveside service at 4 p.m. at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora. VERT - Clinton Vert, 83, of Jamestown, died Dec. 23 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 10 at Rocca Park in Jamestown. Burial will be held at Jamestown City Cemetery. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
