Stanley Leonard Jirka

Stanley Leonard Jirka, of Angels Camp, died Dec. 14 at Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas. He was 70.

He was born in Oakland to Milo and Ruth Jirka.

At an early age, he moved to Stockton with his family and spent his childhood there, graduating from Stagg High School in 1960. Soon after graduation, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in history.

He moved to Angels Camp in 1973, and spent the rest of his life there. He taught at Vallecito High School for 23 years and at Bret Harte High School for one year before retiring in 1997.

His family said he had a passion for photography, history and politics. He often traveled to attend music festivals.

Mr. Jirka is survived by his wife of 16 years, Barbara Hardwick, of Angels Camp; children, Patrick Jirka, of San Diego, Brian Jirka, of Murphys, and Amy Jirka, of South Lake Tahoe; stepchildren, Shane Edwards, of Murrieta, Scott Edwards, of Angels Camp, and Kristen Edwards, of Amarillo, Tex.; three grandchildren; and 12 stepgrandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the multi-purpose room on the Bret Harte Union High School campus.

Ethelyn Ann Wesley

July 6, 1933 - Dec. 20, 2012

Ethelyn Ann Wesley died at her home in Groveland on Dec. 20 after a four-year battle with cancer. She was 79.

Mrs. Wesley was born in Chicago, Ill., to Gustav and Ethelyn Johanson. She was raised in Palos Park and Riverside.

She attended Blackburn College in Illinois for two years.

She moved to California in 1970. She lived in several regions, including Danville from 1970 to 1979, and Buck Meadows from 1979 to 1998, before settling in Groveland in 1998.

She was married to Charles Harold Wesley for 59 years. They had four daughters.

The couple owned and operated Buck Meadows Lodge and Yosemite Westgate Motel from 1979 until their retirement in 1998.

Mrs. Wesley led an involved life. She was a Girl Scout leader for her daughters' troops and a member of the Pine Cone Singers for 30 years. She enjoyed practicing and performing with her friends.

She was a docent at the Groveland Gateway Yosemite Museum, where she spent many hours.

Mrs. Wesley was also a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed dressing up for their functions.

She enjoyed horses and was a member of Groveland Country Mountain Riders.

Mrs. Wesley was a member the Community Presbyterian Church and its choir in Danville in the 1970s and the Buck Meadows Community Church, where she taught Sunday school.

Mrs. Wesley is survived by her husband, Charles Harold Wesley, of Groveland; her daughters and their spouses, Holly Foiles, of Groveland, Bonnie Cobb, of Colma, Claire Greyling, of Hodgenville, Ky., and Robin White, of Sacramento; three sisters, Naureen Bostelman, of Hudson Lake, Ind., Karen Schultz, of LaPorte, Ind., and Ingrid Voelker, also of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Groveland Evangelical Free Church at 19172 Ferretti Road.

SIMMONS - Clarence Richard Simmons, 87, of Akron, Colo., died Dec. 18 at his home. A funeral service was held Wednesday at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Akron. Mr. Simmons was a civil engineer and worked on the Don Pedro Dam. His daughter lives in Sonora. Bowin Funeral Home in Akron handled arrangements.

SINNETTE -Paul Sinnette, 85, of Sonora, died Wednesday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
