Duane Anderson

Duane Anderson, a longtime part-time resident of Tuolumne County, died Nov. 30 at the Veterans' Hospital in Palo Alto. He was 82.

Mr. Anderson, a 25-year resident of Livermore, was born Oct. 16, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minn.

He was a painter for eight years and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. His hobbies included playing chess.

He is survived by two daughters, Diane Simonson, of Minneapolis, and Darlene Hix, of San Jose; an uncle, Sterling Bigbee, of Columbia, and a niece, Cheryl Allen, of Jamestown. A graveside service was held Dec. 6 at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

Edward Gorey

Jan. 16, 1925 - Dec. 5, 2012

Arnold resident Edward Gorey died Dec. 5 at his home. He was 87.

Mr. Gorey was born in Montgomery, Ala., the fifth of eight children, to Pauline and Leo J. Gorey.

Mr. Gorey's family moved to California in 1936 after the death of his father. His mother raised him and his siblings in St. Ambrose Parish, where they played with a group of neighbors called the "Gardener Street Gang."

He graduated from Loyola High School in Los Angeles in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunnery instructor in Pensacola, Fla.

After the war, he worked for Continental Can Co., a packaging and container company, as a lithographer. His work would eventually take him to Northern California, where he met and later married his wife Polly, a widow with two daughters.

They settled in Arnold in the mid-1970s.

He was a member of the Sonora Moose Lodge and enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and watching and betting on football.

Mr. Gorey was preceded in death by his wife and parents; his siblings, Leo J. Gorey Jr., Robert Gorey, Kathryn Mills, Mary Goedike and Betty Gregg.

He is survived by his sisters, Ann Caffrey, of Glendale, and Geraldine Nigg, of Northridge; his stepdaughters, Pamela Bryant and Cynthia Sundling, both of California; and his companion, Gloria Gonzales, of Arnold.

A memorial service has been held.

Inurnment will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Murphys.


CARTER - Kathryn Aston Carter, 91, of Groveland, died Thursday at Sonora Regional Medical Center Transitional Care Unit. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

DIAZ - Maria Alicia (Licha) Diaz, 64, of Jamestown, died Dec. 12 at her home. A memorial service was planned for 11 a.m. to noon today at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 127 W. Jackson St., Sonora. Burial will follow St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sonora.

LIKOUT - Edith Likout, 90, of Tuolumne, died Friday at Sonora Regional Medical Center's Unit Seven. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

MATTHEWS - Faye Matthews, 93, died Friday at Oak Terrace Memory Care in Soulsbyville. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

SMITH - Ruth Smith, 86, of Sonora, died Friday at Avalon Health Care Center in Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

THRELKELD - Former Tuolumne County resident Ethel Threlkeld, 92, of Gold River, died Friday at the Orangevale Home Care Center. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
