He attended school in Angels Camp and graduated as salutatorian from Bret Harte High School in 1967.

He played Little League baseball in his youth and went on to play football and become a star player on the basketball team in high school. He learned animal husbandry as a member of 4-H and from his grandfather on the Whittle Ranch. He later worked alongside his father operating D-8 caterpillars, scrapers and logging trucks.

Returning to the United States in 1972, he joined the California Highway Patrol. His first assignment was in Indio. He went on to work in the area offices of Santa Cruz, Bridgeport and San Andreas. After a career that spanned almost 30 years, he ended his career in Rancho Cordova as a commercial officer.

His hobbies included cooking, hunting and fishing. He took deep sea fishing trips to Mexico and Alaska with his sons and friends, exhibited his deer and buffalo mounts at his home, as well as the many other animals and birds he brought home from trips.

His interests included country western music, cowboy poetry and reading about the Old West.

He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents, Don and Marie Whittle.
