James Henry 'Jim' Murray

Aug. 1, 1928 - Oct. 22, 2012

Sonora resident James Henry "Jim" Murray died Oct. 22 at his home after a long illness. He was 84.

Mr. Murray was born in Sonora and graduated from both Sonora Elementary and Sonora High schools. He graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga in 1951.

After college, he began a 43-year career in the lumber industry. He worked as a lumber salesman with the Pickering Lumber Co. in Standard for many years before retiring as general sales manager with Sierra Pacific Industries in 1995.

Mr. Murray served as the president of the Sonora Rotary Club from 1968 to 1969 and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a life member of the Sonora Elks Lodge 1587, where he served as trustee and treasurer. He was also a member of Sons in Retirement 136, where he served as Big Sir in 2001.

Mr. Murray served on the Tuolumne County Board of Education from 1968 to 1976.

He attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church for more than 10 years.

He enjoyed card games, golf and bowling. He was a sports fan.

Mr. Murray is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Murray, of Sonora; his children, Jan Murray and her partner, Robert Nuccio, of Modesto, Kelly Murray, of Davidson, N.C.; his sister, Betty Pecchenino, of Fresno; and his brother, Jay Baker, of Stockton; and several nieces and nephews.

Donations in his memory may be made to Elks Major Project, c/o Sonora Elks Lodge, 100 Elk Drive, Sonora, CA 95370; Interfaith Community Social Services, 18500 Striker Court, Sonora, CA 95370, or a charity of choice.

A memorial service will be held on at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sonora Elks Lodge, a reception will follow. A private burial will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson.

Michael William Shimonek

Jan. 12, 1942 - Oct. 20, 2012

Twain Harte resident Michael William Shimonek died Oct. 20 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 70.

Mr. Shimonek was born in Evanston, Ill. He grew up in Illinois and graduated from Morgan Park Military Academy in Chicago in 1956 before moving to California and graduating from San Carlos High School in San Carlos in 1960.

Mr. Shimonek served in the U.S. Marine Corps at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station near Irvine from 1960 to 1964. After, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years until retirement.

He and his wife, Barbara, moved from Orange County to Twain Harte in 1982. He continued to work as a postal carrier for many years.

He enjoyed building hot rod cars, watching college football and the USC Trojans, and playing on the computer.

He was a member of the Sonora chapter of Sons in Retirement.

Mr. Shimonek is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Shimonek, of Twain Harte; his daughter, Jackie Allen Shimonek, of Oakdale; his sons, Stephen Taylor Shimonek, of Huntington Beach, Michael G. Shimonek, of Modesto, and Andrew B. Shimonek, of Folsom; his grandchildren, Michael B. Allen, of Jamestown, and Haley and Shelby Hart, of Columbia; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at Angelo's Hall in Columbia State Historic Park.

The Neptune Society is handling arrangements.
