Gilbert Lyle Murphy

Angels Camp resident Gilbert Lyle Murphy died Aug. 27 at his home in the Foothill Village Retirement Community. He was 86.
Mr. Murphy was born in Tuscon, Ariz. He was the youngest of 11 children.
At age 18, he joined the U.S. Army. After attending parachute school in Fort Benning, Ga., he served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign of World War II.
Mr. Murphy served as a police officer in Whittier for 30 years.
He and his wife retired to Big Tree Village in Camp Connell before settling in Angels Camp.
They were members of St. Patrick's Church for many years.
In his early retirement, he took up woodworking. He was well-known by local Realtors for making property owner name signs.
Mr. Murphys is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Ellen Murphy, of Angels Camp; his daughter, Judy Wainwright and her husband, Larry, of Hayesville, N.C.; granddaughter, Trisha Flugel, of Cumming, Ga.; grandson, Brian Wainwright, of Atlanta, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Buena Vista Cemetery, in Murphys. Father Rolando Petronio of St. Patrick's Church will officiate the service.
Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
Ruth Isabel Munger
May 21, 1921 - Aug. 24, 2012
Sonora resident Ruth Isabel Murphy died Aug. 24 at her home. She was 91.
Mrs. Munger was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Lawrence and Erna Robinson.
She graduated from Payette High School in Payette, Idaho, in 1939 and moved with her family to Las Vegas.
She attended Brigham Young University.
She met her future husband while he was in the Army Air Corps stationed at Nellis Air Force Base during World War II. They were married on Feb. 6, 1944.
Mrs. Munger lived most of her adult life in the Pleasanton/Livermore area.
She enjoyed advanced tailoring, knitting, playing bridge and volunteering with cancer patients.
Her family said that she was proud to be descended from pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She died in the care of her husband of 68 years and devoted caregiver, Susan Parker.
Mrs. Munger was preceded in death by her parents; two of her siblings, Jack Robinson and Nola West.
She is survived by her husband, Richard H. Munger, of Sonora; her children, Kathleen Robin Munger, of San Andreas, and Richard A. Munger and his wife, Jane, of Sonora; her brother, Robert Robinson and his wife, Betty, of Las Vegas; her grandchildren, Erin J. Worley, of Fairbanks, Ala., and Corinne A. Munger, of Nevada City; and one great-grandchild.
Privately family services will be held.

Douglas James Peffer
May 24, 1963 - Aug. 20, 2012
Angels Camp resident Douglas James Peffer died Aug. 20 at his home. He was 49.
Mr. Peffer was born in Fremont to Robert and Anita Peffer, the youngest of four children.
He graduated from Mission San Jose High School in 1981.
He joined the Marine Corps in 1982 and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1985.
He met Stephanie Phillips while in high school and they married on July 20, 1985.
Mr. Peffer was a pilot and owned and instructed at Springfield Flying Service in Columbia.
He enjoyed his work, flying and riding his motorcycle.
Mr. Peffer is survived by his wife of 27 years, Stephanie Peffer, of Angels Camp; his children, Robert Peffer, of Naples, Italy, Keith Peffer and his wife, Ashleigh, of Beaufort, S.C., and Andrea Peffer, of Angels Camp; his parents, Robert and Anita Peffer, of Ashland, Ore.; and siblings, Mike Peffer, of Boulder, Colo., Cheryl Ugland, of Ashland, and Jeanne Peffer-Lucas, of Anchorage, Alaska.
A memorial service was held Aug. 30 at Chapel in the Pines in Arnold.
Angels Memorial Chapel handled the arrangements.
Michael B. Hathaway
Jan. 5, 1949 - Aug. 21, 2012
Arnold resident Michael B. Hathaway died Aug. 21 at his home. He was 63.
Mr. Hathaway was born in Long Beach.
He moved to Angels Camp 20 years ago to pursue a job opportunity and to be closer to his brother.
He was an architect and real estate agent in Forest Meadows and designed many buildings in the Angels Camp area, including the Angels Camp Visitor Center, Cedars Inn and Foothill Village Retirement Community.
He enjoyed golfing.
Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his wife, Ossa Hathaway, in 2006, and his brother, David Hathaway, 2000.
He is survived by his father, Robert Hathaway, of Poulsbo, Wash.; his mother, Rosemary Hathaway, of Los Osos; his children, Matthew, Mark, Mitchell and Michaela Hathaway, of Los Osos; and his brother, Chris Hathaway, of San Andreas.
No services to be held.
