Maxine 'Macky' Mapel

Aug. 11, 1924 - July 4, 2012

Tuolumne County resident Maxine "Macky" Mapel died July 4 at Country Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Modesto. She was 87.

Ms. Mapel was born in Rock Island, Ill. She lived in Bay Area for 30 years but later moved around for several years. She settled in Jamestown in 2003.

After breaking her shoulder in 2008, she lived in multiple long term care facilities in the Sonora area before moving to Modesto in May.

Ms. Mapel had many different jobs throughout her life but enjoyed working in the arts, teaching pre-school, retail and reception.

She was an artist and enjoyed taking classes. She practiced painting, drawing, jewelry making, copper etching, sculpture, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed book clubs that read non-fiction books in particular.

Ms. Mapel was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Brown, in 2004; her sister, Susan Jordan, in 1996; grandson, Devin van Eck, in April 2012; and former husband, Eugene Brown.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Steve and Sally Brown, of Portland, Ore., Gordon "Corky" and Charlotte Brown, of Youngstown, Ariz., and Terry and Doug Van Eck, of Newark; her sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Vernon Forsberg, of Madison, Wis., her brother-in-law, Ron Jordan, of Coal Valley, Ill.; and her grandchildren and their spouses, Janet and Raymond Kirkland, of Washington; Tammy and Patrick Galberaith, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Ryan and Kimberly Brown, of Avondale, Ariz., and Wendy Gonzales, of Newark.

Services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sonora, 40 N. Forest Road. A meal will follow the service.

McGuire Cremation and Funeral Services is handling arrangements.

Larry Koch

Jan. 17, 1941 - July 31, 2012

Larry Koch, who split his time between San Jose and his cabin in Twain Harte, died July 31 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 71.

Mr. Koch was born in Bucyrus, Miss., to Kenneth and Jessie Koch. He graduated from high school in Casper, Wyo.

He served in the U.S. Army for three years and was stationed in Germany, where he met his future wife, Inge. They wed on Aug. 24, 1962.

He worked in the chemical industry for 40 years at Platte Pipeline and Air Products in San Jose.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors and working on his cabin.

Mr. Koch was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Keith Koch; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Inge Koch; his daughters and their spouses, Dina and Russ Berckart; and Wendy and Tony Bartyczak; his siblings, Karlene Anthony and Lonnie Koch; and his grandchildren, Alexandria, Kyle, Garrett, Tanner and Parker, all of the San Jose area.

No services are planned at this time.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
