William Ray 'Bill' Smith

Sonora resident William Ray "Bill" Smith died at his home June 23. He was 86.
Mr. Smith was born in Kokomo, Ind., to Ben and Eva Smith.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific in World War II. He worked as an airplane mechanic and trained to be a pilot.
After the war, he owned a machine business in Palo Alto for 49 years before retiring to Sonora, where he lived for 23 years.
He was a pilot and liked flying to Mexico for fishing trips. He enjoyed spending holidays with his family and sports, particularly golfing, bowling and baseball. He also enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada in his motor home.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nora I. Smith, of Sonora; his daughters, Darla Watlet, of Sonora and Linda Zirbes, of Prunedale; his son-in-law, George Zirbes; his siblings, Bob Smith and Barbara Smith; his grandchildren, Barry, Tiffany, Shelly, Joel, Samantha, and Nicolle; and 16 great-grandchildren.
No services will he held.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of the Sierra.

JOHNSON - Gayle Ruth Johnson, 53, of Sonora, died Friday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
