Fred Leonard Grant Jr.

Aug. 29, 1922 - June 23, 2012

Sonora resident Fred Leonard Grant Jr. died Saturday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 89.

Mr. Grant was born in Sherman in Los Angeles County, to parents Fred and Hazel (Gilpatrick) Grant. He grew up in Topanga Canyon.

He graduated from Canoga Park High School, where he met his future wife, Barbara Jean Zumwalt. They wed on Jan. 24, 1942, and were married for 70 years.

Mr. Grant worked at North American Aircraft building airplanes until Pearl Harbor. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a transport pilot in the South Pacific during World War II.

After the war he had a farm in Hanford. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and later the Department of Motor Vehicles, serving as a manager for more than 30 years. He was a Sonora resident for 49 years.

He was a member of Sonora United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and animals, particularly dogs, horses, cats and birds.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Zumwalt) Grant, of Sonora; his children, Ginia Klamecki, of Minneapolis, Minn., Fred Grant III, of Paris, Texas, Charles Grant, of Chico, and Christina Pehrson, of Sonora.; daughters-in-law Minnie Grant, and Jennifer Grant; and son-in-law Barney Klamecki; his sister, Virginia Nichols, of Sunland; his grandchildren, Amy and Michael Zawalski, of Lafayette, Carrie and Terrence Hendricks, of Minneapolis, Minn., Fred Grant IV of Texas, Cheri and Jeff Gillespie of Dublin, Jeanna and Darrel Frost, of Eureka, James Thorpe, of Klamath Falls, Ore., Rebekah Taylor, of Spokane, Wash., Benjamin Grant, of Klamath Falls, Ore., Kristen and Andrew Jarrett of Gilbert, Ariz., Melissa Grant, of Chico, Timothy Grant, of Chico, Jeff Pehrson and fiancee Jordan Auleb, of San Francisco, Heather and Jason Karney, of Sonora; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sonora United Methodist Church, 90 Yaney Ave., Sonora.

Donations can be made in his name to Sonora United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or other charities.

Seth Straws

June 8, 1923 - June 26, 2012

Columbia resident Seth Straws died June 26 at the Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 89.

Mr. Straws was born in Ogema, Wis. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946 where he was stationed in the Panama Canal, Africa, and the Pacific.

He owned Straws Concrete Pumping Company for 15 years.

He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and was a member of Columbia Presbyterian Church. He married his wife, Mary Straws, of Plainview, Ark., in 1987.

Mr. Straws is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Linda Van Vleck, of Plymouth, Mike Straws, of Sonora, Kenneth Straws, of Redding, and Rebecca Moore, of Pacifica; daughters-in-law Nancy Staws, Cindy Straws, and Kelly Straws; sons-in-law Lewis Van Vleck, and Dave Moore; siblings Harold Straws, of Tacoma, Wash., Aldan Straws, of Bremerton, Wash., Violet Erichsen, of Everett, Wash., Audrey Wilhelm, of Marysville, and Phyllis Redlands, of Sun City, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A donation in his name can be made to Church of the 49ers Monday night dinners.

Viewing is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

Services will be held privately at Columbia City Cemetery.
