Barbara (Rice) Floren

June 2, 1942 - June 15, 2012

Groveland resident Barbara (Rice) Floren died June 15 at her home. She was 70.

She was born in San Luis Obispo and lived in Groveland for 12 years. She was a secretary and enjoyed quilting, reading, fishing and camping.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William "Bill" Floren, of Groveland; her mother, Glodale Rice, of San Jose; children and their spouses, John and Tricia Floren, of Livermore, Dan and Fernanda Floren, of Riverbank, and Kimberly and Adam Abramski, of West Linn, Ore.; grandchildren Kathleen and Kaitlyn Floren, of Riverbank, and Gillian and Ashlee Floren, of Livermore; her sister, Bernice Braughton, of Morgan Hill; and her brother, Albert Rice, of San Jose; and her sister-in-law, Gaylene McIntosh, of San Jose.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mary Laveroni Park, 18990 Highway 120, Groveland.

A donation in her name may be made to Cancer Patient Support Group, Sonora Regional Medical Center, 900 Greenley Road, Sonora, CA 95370, or to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

William 'Bill' Lee Hightower

March 12, 1943 - June 12, 2012

Tuolumne resident William "Bill" Lee Hightower died June 12 at Palo Alto Veterans Hospital of liver cancer and complications from surgery. He was 69.

Mr. Hightower was born in Stockton to Clarence and Carol Hightower. He attended schools in Modesto and Arizona before graduating from Summerville High School in 1961. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in October of that year and served for four years, including a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Mr. Hightower worked a short time at Columbia Airport before beginning a 30-year career with the Tuolumne Telephone Company as an installer and central office technician. After retiring in 2000, he and his wife, Irene, moved to Wellington, Nev., where they lived for 10 years before returning to Tuolumne.

Mr. Hightower enjoyed home improvement and automotive projects, target shooting and reloading and backpacking. He was a life member of the Marine Corps association and

Veterans of Foreign Wars Keith Dale Wann Post No. 4748.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Hightower is survived by his wife of 30 years, Irene Hightower of Tuolumne, his sons and daughters-in-law, Stacy and Michelle Hightower, of Tuolumne and Tracy and LeAnne Hightower, of Mariposa; a stepdaughter and her husband, Cynthia and Keith Clarke, of San Mateo; his sister, Annette Carrol of San Francisco; a stepsister, Brenna Collett, of Palm Springs; and three grandchildren, Clarice, Christina and Cevin Hightower, all of Mariposa.

At Mr. Hightower's request, no services will be held.

Arrangements were handled by the Veteran's Administration.

Tom Bradford Johnson

Aug. 29, 1934 - May 8, 2012

Sonora resident Tom Johnson died May 8 at his home. He was 78.

Mr. Johnson was born and grew up in Cudahy, Wis. He enjoyed sailing, old cars and Irish setters. He earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Northwestern University, taught in Chicago and moved to Pacifica in 1978.

He moved to Sonora in 2002. He was a member of SIRS and a longtime member of AA.

His ashes were spread with ashes of his three dogs in the mountains on Saturday.

Oakdale Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
