Richard Wallace Chartrand

Sept. 12, 1935 - March 3, 2012

Jamestown resident Richard Wallace Chartrand died March 3 at his home of cancer. He was 76.

Mr. Chartrand was born in Seattle and worked in auto assembly at General Motors, where he retired after 31 years. He served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed family vacations and holidays. Mr. Chartrand also enjoyed road trips, camping, fishing and collecting novelties.

Mr. Chartrand was preceded in death by his father, Lee Francis Chartrand, in 1962; his mother, Truth Opal Chartrand, in 1981; sisters, Bonnie Jean Pidcock, in 1964 and Patricia Chartrand, in 2003; and stepson, Michael Dale Harris, in 2007.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jo Chartrand, of Tuolumne; children, Leanna Fifi Duncan, of Oregon, Laurie Lisa Jay Parisi, of Santa Cruz, Richard Wallace Chartrand, of Oregon, Lana Jo Campbell, of Jamestown, Lynnette Renee Chartrand, of Sonora; his stepdaughter, Debbie Salazar, of Sonora; grandchildren, Josha Zacha, of Montana, Elijah Flores-Duncan, of Oregon, Dillon Silva, of California, Jared Silva, of California, Austin Powlak, of California, Logan Chartrand, of Oregon, Codie Chartrand, of Oregon, Daniel Chartrand, of California, Elijah Garcia, of California, Hannah Garcia-Campbell, of California, Eric Burdon, of California, Evan Burdon, of California, and Ashley Burdon, of California; two great-grandchildren; and siblings Lee "Bud" Chartrand, of Arizona, and Cherie Chartrand, of Missouri.

Private services were held.

Frank Joseph Chimente

Jan. 27, 1918 - April 29, 2012

Cedar Ridge resident Frank Joseph Chimente died April 29 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 94.

Mr. Chimente was born in Oakland and was a veteran of World War II. He lived in San Lorenzo for many years before moving to Cedar Ridge. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years. He was a member of the Sons In Retirement club of Sonora. He enjoyed gardening and gambling at Black Oak Casino.

Mr. Chimente is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Chimente, of Cedar Ridge; sons and daughter-in-law Robert Chimente, of Cedar Ridge, and Michael and Maria Chimente, of Angels Camp; grandchildren Mark, Michelle and her husband Brian Alberto, Tony, Joseph and Thomas; and two step great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. at Angels Memorial Chapel.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Angels Camp.

Richard Gene Hoffman

April 4, 1934 - April 24, 2012

Sonora resident Richard Gene Hoffman died April 24 at Avalon Care Center. He was 78.

Mr. Hoffman was born in Aurora, Neb., and raised in Iowa. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and was stationed at Travis Air Force Base for four years. He married, had three children and worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for more than 10 years.

Mr. Hoffman was later a retail floor covering salesman for 27 years. He divorced in the late 1960s.

He married his second wife in 1975 and they lived in California, Iowa, Montana and then moved back to California. The couple retired in 1996 and moved to Sonora Hills where he enjoyed playing cards, cooking, gardening and traveling. He was a member of Sons In Retirement Chapter No. 136 of Sonora.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty; and his stepson, Craig.

Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lorraine Hoffman, of Sonora; children, Martha, of Texas, and Elizabeth and Don, of California; his stepdaughter, Suzanne, of Alaska; his stepdaughter-in-law, Marie, of California; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

An open house memorial will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. May 5 at his home in Sonora Hills.

Arthur Gustave Johansen

June 14, 1933 - April 23, 2012

Former Angels Camp resident Arthur Gustave Johansen died April 23 at his family's home in Discovery Bay. He was 78.

Mr. Johansen was born in Straubville, N.D. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired carpenter, and a member of the Union Congregational Church in Angels Camp.

Mr. Johansen was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Johansen, in 2005.

He is survived by his children William Cullen Johansen, of Gilroy, Jimmy Kaalas Johansen, of Discovery Bay, and Cindy Renee Johansen-Seyboldt, of Sutter Creek; nine grandchildren; his brothers James Rolland Johansen, of Columbus, Mont., and Danny Dean Johansen, of Mission Viejo.

No services will be held at his request. Inurnment will be private.

Georgee "Darlene" (Robinson) Lutts

Feb. 16, 1921 - April 21, 2012

Groveland resident Georgee "Darlene" (Robinson) Lutts died April 21 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 91.

Mrs. Lutts was born in Dinuba and lived in Groveland 37 years. She was a World War II veteran. Serving as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, she was a surgical nurse in the South Pacific and served in occupied Japan.

She continued nursing for 40 years and retired in 1975 as director of nursing services at Stanford University Hospital. She later came out of retirement to serve as director of nursing during the consolidation of Sonora Community and Sierra Hospitals in Sonora.

Mrs. Lutts was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard E. "Mel" Lutts Sr., in 2011; sons, Brad Lutts, of Susanville, Maynard E. Lutts Jr., of Groveland, and Stan Lutts, of Washington; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No services are planned.
