Longtime Sonora resident Nellie Yolanda (Cavalieri) Ballwanz died Feb. 26 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 94.
Mrs. Ballwanz was born in Sonora and attended Sonora Elementary and Sonora High schools. She then moved to San Francisco with her aunt and then married and moved to Modesto.
Mrs. Ballwanz moved back to Sonora in the mid 1960s.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Mrs. Ballwanz was preceded in death by her husband, Merv Ballwanz; parents Joseph and Mary Cavalieri; brothers Paul and Frank Cavalieri; and sisters Mary Dossi and Lucille Cruse.
Mrs. Ballwanz is survived by her sister Louise Dorrey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A donation in her name may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 Rose Avenue, Sonora.

Clara Smith Holloway

Longtime Sonora resident Clara Holloway died Feb. 26 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 104.
Ms. Holloway was born in Griggsville, Ill., and worked as a motel maid. She lived in Sonora for 47 years.
Ms. Holloway is survived by her nephew, E.B. Polson, of Many, La.; and her niece, Patricia Robertson.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Suzanne L. Mason
May 17, 1927 - Feb. 20, 2012
Former Sonora resident Suzanne L. Mason died Feb. 20 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Baker City, Ore. She was 84.
Mrs. Mason was born in Oakland to Robert Brixner and Elizabeth (Nall) Brixner.
She graduated from high school in Santa Cruz in 1947 and attended Mills College.
Mrs. Mason was owner and trainer of her own equestrian centers from 1950 to 1972, the most well-known being Loma Alta Riding Academy in Santa Cruz. From then until her death, she was primarily self-employed.
She married Alfred Henry Mason on Feb. 25, 1951 in St. Clemens Church in Berkeley. She enjoyed fishing, exploring, traveling, dogs, horses and encouraging young horseback riders.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church, the Santa Cruz Horseman's Association, Twain Harte Horsemen and the Tuolumne County Kennel Club.
Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Henry Mason.
She is survived by daughters, Leslie Maiwald-Dickerson, of Baker City, Melanie Mason, of Jamestown and Christine Mason, of Sonora; her son, Alfred Mason, of Medical Springs, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A donation in her name may be made to local 4-H or Tuolumne County Humane Society.
No services will be held. Coles Tribute Center of Oregon handled arrangements.

Former Sonora resident Marie Agnes O'Connor Panto died Feb. 20 at her home in Placerville.
Mrs. Panto was born in San Francisco and lived most of her life in Redwood City.
She lived the past five years with her daughter Carmen DeCristoferi in Sonora.
She was mother to seven, grandmother to 14 and great-grandmother to seven.
Mrs. Panto was preceded in death by her husband, Carmen Joseph Panto; and her son, Thomas Dominic Panto.
Mrs. Panto is survived by her brother, Charles Francis O'Connor; her children, Carmen DeCristoferi, Vincent Panto, Christina Brown, William Panto, Josephine Clark and Edward Panto; grandchildren Adam, Gregory, Stephanie, Robert, Dayna, Anthony, Heather, Tiffany, Corey, Trey, Andrew, Dorothy, Gina and Francesca; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name may be made to Interfaith Community Social Services in Sonora.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 3109 Sacramento St., Placerville, with a reception to follow.

Sherrill (Etter) Smartt
Feb. 27, 1941 - Feb. 16, 2012
Jamestown resident Sherrill (Etter) Smartt died Feb. 16 at her home. She was 70.
Mrs. Smartt was born in Glendale and was a registered nurse for 25 years. She lived in Tuolumne County for 15 years.
Mrs. Smartt enjoyed traveling and reading.
She is survived by her daughter, Terri Mendes, of Newman; her son, David Smartt, of Caldwell, Idaho; her brother, James Morris, of Valencia; and grandchildren Justin Mendes, Cameron Mendes, Courtney Mendes, Jackson Smartt, Samuel Smartt, Alyssa Smartt and Christian Smartt.
Private family services were held.
Burial was at Mt. Shadow Cemetery in Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
SHARON - Allen Ray "Al" Sharon, 66, of Sonora, died Feb. 24 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. A memorial service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose Ave., Sonora. Terzich and Wilson is handling arrangements.
