Leonard A.

'Len' Sevier

April 7, 1937 - Feb. 7, 2012

Angels Camp resident Leonard A. "Len" Sevier died Feb. 7 at his home. He was 74.

Mr. Sevier was born in Oklahoma and lived in Benicia for many years, before moving to Angels Camp five years ago.

He retired from the Mare Island Shipyard, where he worked as a mechanic on nuclear submarines. He was also a planner and estimator and traveled to many places including Scotland, Africa and the East Coast of the U.S. to work on submarines.

Mr. Sevier spent 33 years in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired with the rank of command sergeant major.

At the age of 5 he went to work in the cotton fields to earn the $10 a month it took to pay the rent on the family home. Throughout high school he worked two jobs to make sure his mother and siblings had clothes, food and an allowance.

He enjoyed going to car shows with his 1965 red Ford Mustang.

Mr. Sevier was preceded in death by his mother, Jewell Sevier; father, Robert Sevier; and brothers Bob and Larry Sevier.

He is survived by sisters Mary Janak, of Houston, Texas, Carol Williams and her husband Vern Williams, of Vacaville, and Bev Sevier, of Galt; brothers Ron and his wife Isabelle Sevier, of Benicia, and Mike Sevier, of Angels Camp; four children; three stepchildren; six grandchildren; his companion of 18 years, Nevada Gray, of Angels Camp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A family and friend service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at 12 Rufe Lane, Vallecito.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.


Bruce Tippett

Oct. 11, 1956 - Feb. 6, 2012

Longtime Tuolumne resident Steven Bruce Tippett died Monday at his home. He was 55.

Mr. Tippett was born in Stockton and was a Christian. He worked as a musician and wrote his own music. He was an extra in the movie, "Dire Straits," and had a band called Restless Wind.

Mr. Tippett is survived by his daughter, Calinda Tippett-Phillips, of Weed; and granddaughter, Maci Phillips.

A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Courthouse Square in Sonora.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
