Elwood A. Brown

May 21, 1919 - Jan. 30, 2012

Former Sonora resident Elwood A. Brown died Jan. 30 at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto. He was 92.

Mr. Brown was born in Sparks, Nev., and grew up in various mining towns including six years in Bodie, which is now a state park in Mono County.

Mr. Brown was an aerospace quality assurance engineer, skier, hiker, photographer and golfer with the Sons in Retirement.

His family history dates back to early Tuolumne County pioneer days and he was related to the Holman family, who owned Mundorf's Hardware and the Tuolumne Foundry.

Mr. Brown graduated from Sonora High School and attended Modesto Junior and DeAnza colleges. He was sent to Pearl Harbor after the bombing in 1941 and entered the U.S. Navy, where he serviced military transport aircraft.

He was employed by Pan American Airways for 20 years. He later was employed by Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. for 20 years as a quality control engineer on the NASA Moon Project and Poseidon Missile Program.

After retirement in 1981, Mr. Brown and his wife traveled extensively before they co-founded the Bay Area chapter of the American Liver Foundation and the Family Prayer Hour at St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Mountain View.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Barbara Brown, of Palo Alto; his son and daughter-in-law, William and Dianne Brown; daughters Kathleen Gallagher, Priscilla Stoddard and her husband Charles Stoddard; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his brother John Brown.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Brown; and his sister, Eleanor Holman, of Sonora.

Services have been held in the Bay Area.

Interment will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sonora.

Meredyth

Burnette

Dec. 8, 1918 - Jan. 27, 2012

Sonora resident Meredyth Burnette died Jan. 27 at Sonora Regional Medical Center Long Term Care. She was 93.

Mrs. Burnette owned an antique store in Sonora for 35 years before retiring. She was a lifetime member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Her husband, Paul Burnette, owned the Burnette Moving Van in 1939.

Mrs. Burnette is survived by her daughter, Patricia Coupland, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Betty Whitehouse, of Sonora.

No services will be held.

A donation in her name may be made to the Arizona Deaf Community in Needs, 5025 N. Central Ave., PMB No. 277, Phoenix, AZ 85012.

Orange 'Cal'

Critchfield

Oct. 12, 1920 - Feb. 3, 2012

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Orange "Cal" Critchfield died Feb. 3 at Meadow View Manor in Sonora. He was 91.

Mr. Critchfield was born in Madera and lived in Sonora for 30 years. He was a real estate agent and insurance agent for 30 years.

Mr. Critchfield served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church of the 49ers. He was past president of the Sonora Lions Club and was on the Richmond Board of Realtors. He was also a member of Twain Harte Twirlers and Mountain Rounders square dance clubs.

Mr. Critchfield was preceded in death by his wife, Jayne Critchfield, in 2006; and sisters Irene Sweany and Jocena Thiel.

He is survived by his sister, Ruth Nichols, of Napa; sons Harry Critchfield, of Sonora, and David and his wife Jerri Critchfield, of Sonora; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Columbia Church of the 49ers.

Sally Ann

De Anda

June 12, 1962 - Feb. 5, 2012

Lifelong Tuolumne resident Sally Ann De Anda died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 49.

Ms. De Anda was born in Sonora and lived in Tuolumne her entire life. She worked as a clerk and bookkeeper.

She was preceded in death by grandparents Blas De Anda in 1961, Aurelia De Anda in 1972, Richard E. Crandall in 1987, and Clara Crandall in 2000.

Ms. De Anda is survived by her parents Vincent and Naomi De Anda, of Tuolumne; brothers and sisters-in-law Chris and Katrina De Anda and Mark and Corina De Anda, both of Tuolumne; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson's Tuolumne Chapel, 18411 Bay Ave.

Shelly Kay Wynne

Nov. 23, 1960 - Jan. 29, 2012

Sonora resident Shelly Kay Wynne died Jan. 29 at her home. She was 51.

Mrs. Wynne was raised in Sacramento, the daughter of Don and Amanda Starr. She moved to Salinas in 1979 and started out her career as an emergency medical technician for A-1 Ambulance in Salinas.

She then went on to become one of the original Monterey County paramedics when the county went to advanced life support ambulances.

Mrs. Wynne then went on to get her registered nurse's license and graduated with honors from the Hartnell College nursing program.

Mrs. Wynne then worked the emergency room at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wynne moved to Sonora five years ago.

Mrs. Wynne enjoyed gardening, horseback riding and spending time with her numerous animals.

Mrs. Wynne is survived by her husband of 27 years, Ken Wynne, of Sonora; her mother, Amanda Starr; her father-in law Don Wynne; sisters Angela Cadel, Teri Starr, Teena Correra and her twin sister Tracy Henderson.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Starr; and her brother Monty Starr.

A private family service has been held.

In lieu of flowers a donation in her name may be made to a local animal shelter or humane society.
