Mary Norris

Nov. 30, 1910 - Jan. 16, 2012

Former Calaveras County resident Mary Norris, most recently of Lincoln, died Monday at a residential care home in Roseville. She was 101.

Born Nov. 30, 1910, in Tuttle, Okla., to Charles and Deatha Bashara, the third of six children, she started her education in a one-room schoolhouse.

The family moved to Norman, Okla., where she completed her education at Oklahoma University with a bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1936. She taught three years in Oklahoma, then migrated to California, where she completed 32 years of teaching.

She was married in 1940 and had one son, Charley Kendall, in 1946. The family moved from Southern California to the Bay Area in 1951, and she married Ralph Norris in 1961. They lived in Mountain Ranch from 1971 until 1996.

She move to Sun City Lincoln Hills in Lincoln in 2004 to be near her son and family.

Her hobbies were collecting antiques, traveling, crocheting, reading and playing cards.

In her travels, she went to Lebanon to visit relatives and saw her grandmother's house where her father was born. She made three trips to Europe and took three cruises. Her travels took her to the Panama Canal, Canada, Alaska, Mexico and all but two of the 50 states.

Mrs Norris was preceded in death by her husband in 2000, and by her parents.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charley and Jeanne Ann Kendall, of Lincoln; one sister, Irene A. Kendall, of Moreno Valley in Riverside County; three grandchildren, Brent Kendall and his spouse, Jennifer, of Plano, Texas, Devin Kendall, of Denver, and Angela Blank and her husband, Garrett, of Lincoln; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Mountain Ranch Community Church, immediately followed by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m.

San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Vern H. Miller

Oct. 13, 1924 - Dec. 10, 2011

Vern H. Miller, of Hathaway Pines, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton after a brief illness. He was 87.

He was born in Sebastopol to Josephine Drucilla Moore and Vern Henry Miller Sr. He lived there until graduating from Analy High School. He then joined the Army Air Force and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, he attended Santa Rosa Junior College where he met his future wife, Cynthia Park. They were married on Oct. 19, 1947.

He started his career in building material sales soon after and worked first for Petaluma Building Materials. After moving his family to Fremont in 1965, he became a salesman, and later marketing and sales manager for Building Material Distributors.

His performance often resulted in prizes ranging from the family's first color television set to trips with his wife to many countries, including Puerto Rico, Spain, Portugal, England and Tahiti.

He retired after 20 years, and in 1997, the couple moved to Hathaway Pines.

His interests included camping, hiking and backpack trips, watching basketball, playing golf and dancing. He designed and built wood camping boxes, utensil holders, wine racks and a serving tray that he marketed locally.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his sister, Marilyn Pierre Hoppel, of Valley Springs; children and their spouses, James and Jean Miller, of Pittsburg, and Nancy and Tim Delgado, of Murphys; granddaughters and spouses, Callie and David Cerwonka, of Los Angeles, Sarah and Mike DeGroat, of Livermore, and Lauren Delgado, of Tennessee; two great-grandsons; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Angels Memorial Chapel, 1071 S. Main St., Angels Camp. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Calaveras Humane Society, P.O. Box 1390, San Andreas, CA 95249 or another charity of choice.

Neptune Society handled arrangements.

Randall Lawrence 'Ran' Poulin

Feb. 12, 1935 - Jan. 6, 2012

Randall Lawrence "Pan" Poulin, of Groveland, died Jan. 6 near his Groveland home of natural causes. He was 76.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1935, to Evelyn and Lawrence Poulin in Yakima, Wash.

He attended St. Paul's grade school and graduated from Marquette High School in 1953, after which he attended Yakima Valley Junior College for two years.

During summer months, he worked as a patrolman and sometimes as a fire look out, for the U.S. Forest Service in Packwood, Wash.

After moving to Southern California, he started his career with Unocal Corp. where he worked for 37 years before retiring in 1993. That career was interrupted for two years when he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was stationed at Camp Zama, Japan, where he was assigned to the U.S. Army Map Service and the Criminal Investigation Corp.

Returning to Southern California, he resumed his career with Unocal and met Jody Waitman. They were married on May 20, 1961.

His career led him and his family to live and work in several places in Los Angeles and Orange counties, Santa Maria in Santa Barbara county, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. He retired while living in Santa Maria, and in May 2002, he and his wife moved to Groveland.

His interests included traveling and sports of all kinds.

Mr. Poulin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jody, of Grove-land; daughter, Heidi Poulin, of San Jose; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Melissa Poulin, of Garden Grove; adopted son, Kriengdej Kasemsan, of Bangkok, Thailand; brothers, Patrick Poulin and Bill Poulin, of Yakima, Wash.; brother, Lloyd "Bud" Poulin, of Palm Desert; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Jan. 12 at Groveland Evangelical Free Church.

Donations made be made in his name to Guide Dogs for the Blind, P.O. Box 151200, San Rafael, CA 94915-1200. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
