Elsie Marie Taylor

Nov. 2, 1924 - Dec. 22, 2011

Rail Road Flat resident Elsie Marie Taylor died Dec. 22 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas. She was 87.

Born in Norway, Mo., to Larry and Ruby Allison, she grew up there and later met and married Ernest Mather there. The couple had a son together but later divorced.

She married William Booth, and they had five children together. He died in 1976.

She worked at Mare Island in Vallejo during World War II. After the war, she worked as a waitress and then as a home care worker taking care of her parents. She also worked in a circuit board plant in Minnesota for almost 15 years.

In 1982, she married Sherman Taylor and the couple moved to Rail Road Flat.

She enjoyed sewing, doing crafts and attending events at the Rail Road Flat Community Hall.

She was a member of the Rail Road Flat Community Bible Church.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her brother, Robert Allison, of Napa; children and their spouses, Larry and Linda Mather, of Sacramento, Robert and Maria Booth, of Vallejo, William and Wendy Booth, of Blaine, Minn., Laura and Don Hanson, of Layton, Utah, Billie and Ron Gonzales, of Rail Road Flat, and Shirley and Vernon Armstrong, of Elk River, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her second husband, William Booth; and third husband, Sherman Taylor.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rail Road Flat Community Church.

Marvin

Russell Hansen

May 12, 1940 - Dec. 29, 2011

Angels Camp resident Marvin Russell Hansen died Dec. 29 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. He was 71.

Born in Miles City, Mont., to Vera Pauline and Gus Hansen, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was an electrical engineer for Lockheed Martin for 30 years.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mr. Hansen is survived by his wife, Karen Hansen, of Angels Camp; brothers, Harold James Hansen, of Washington, and Earl Gustav Hansen, of Sierra Madre; and sisters, Alice Rosalle Hansen, of Washington, and Vera Lorraine Martin, of Montana.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Murphys.

Inurnment will be private.

Dean W. Squires

Dec. 4, 1931 - Jan. 1, 2012

Sonora resident Dean W. Squires died Sunday at his home after a long illness. He was 80.

Born in California to Mabel Woolley and Jess Squires, he was an electrician for Alameda County for 40 years.

He lived in Sonora for 18 years.

He was a member of the Twain Harte Golf Club and Sons in Retirement.

When he was younger he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling, he and his wife being members of an RV group.

Mr. Squires is survived by his wife, Sherleen Squires, of Sonora; son, Jess Squires, of Brentwood; two nephews; and a niece.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lorene Squires.

A celebration of life will be held at noon Jan. 14 at the Best Western Oaks Conference Center's Oak Glenn Room in East Sonora.

Natalie Churchill

June 21, 1931 - Dec. 27, 2011

Sonora resident Natalie Churchill died Dec. 27 at her home. She was 80.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, to Charles Sisco and Irma Nell Perotti, she lived in Los Angeles as a child and moved to Modesto in her late teens.

She was married Charles Lee Dillener Sr. and later went on to marry Jabez Frank Warren Churchill.

She worked in sales in the Central Valley before moving from Modesto to Tuolumne County in the mid-1990s.

She enjoyed traveling, antique shopping and collecting, having birdhouses, music and movies.

Mrs. Churchill is survived by her seven children; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many friends and extended family members.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Lee Dillener Sr.; second husband Jabez Frank Warren Churchill; and sisters, Mernie Madruga and Diane Kane.

A celebration of life is scheduled for a later date.

George L. Nelson

July 22, 1926 - Dec. 31, 2011

Longtime Mountain Ranch resident George L. Nelson died Saturday at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas. He was 85.

Born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, to Halbert and Vera Nelson, by the time he was 12 he was attending school and working full-time at a meat market, both before and after school.

The family moved to California in 1944, and shortly thereafter he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines and Japan with the 25th Division.

After the war, he joined the UC Berkeley Police Department, and in 1952 married Gerarda Von Stietz.

In 1961, the couple moved to Mountain Ranch. Gerarda died in 1967.

In 1968, he began working for the Calaveras County Emergency Service Office, where he met Evelyn Bevins, whom he married in 1972. She died in 1986.

He began working for the City of Stockton in the late 1970s.

In 1987, he retired and opened his own specialty supply business.

He enjoyed traveling, having been to Europe, Australia twice, and New Zealand.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his daughter, Melinda Nelson, of Mountain Ranch.

A private family service is schedule.
