Jessie Hill Matthews

Jan. 10, 1925 - Nov. 27, 2011

Sonora resident Jessie Hill Matthews died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 86.

Born in Georgia to Charles and Martha Hill, she was a homemaker for 67 years.

She enjoyed making jewelry, feeding birds and decorating eggs, including kiwi and ostrich eggs.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Conrad and Nancy Matthews, of Sonora; brother, Charles Hill, of Hawkinsville, Ga.; grandchildren, Kimberly Matthews, and Chris and wife Jaquline Matthews, all of Sonora; and one great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Matthews.

A private family service is scheduled.

The Neptune Society of Central California in Modesto is handling arrangements.

Laura Maxene Arndt

July 1, 1916 - Nov. 23, 2011

Sonora resident Laura Maxene Arndt died Nov. 23 at Avalon Care Center. She was 95.

Born in Red Bluff to Richard Maxwell and Laura Mabel Melvin Clausnitzer, she graduated from high school in Red Bluff and went on to earn a diploma from the Academy of Fashion Design in San Francisco in 1936.

In her late teens, she became an Evangelical Christian during a tent campaign in Gerber, where she met John Arndt. The couple later married and moved to Portland, Ore., where she lived for 62 years.

After her husband died in 1959, she worked for Portland State University's Library Acquisitions Department for more than 18 years.

She later moved to Fresno to be near her son and his wife, and then to Sonora in 2007.

She enjoyed being a homemaker, taking care of others, and attending church.

Mrs. Arndt is survived by her children, John Richard and wife Dorothy Woodford Arndt, of Sonora, and Catherine Gene Congdon, of Killingworth, Conn.; former daughter-in-law, Janette Arndt, of Fresno; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Arndt; sister, Imogene Adams; half-brothers, Arch and Bud Clausnitzer; and a great-grandson.

A service is scheduled for a later date in Portland, Ore.

Marie Rose Romano

Dec. 17, 1925 - Nov. 27, 2011

Former Sonora resident Marie Rose Romano died Sunday at a convalescent home in San Jose. She was 85.

Born in San Jose to Josephine Cancilla and Salvador Sorci, she lived with her family in Santa Clara for many years before moving to Sonora, where she and her husband, Ben, lived for more than 20 years. The couple later moved to San Jose.

Mrs. Romano is survived by her husband of 67 years, Ben Romano, of San Jose; and children, Joann Cervantez, and Benjamin Romano, both of San Jose, and David Romano, of Truckee.

A celebration of life is scheduled for noon Dec. 17 at the Three Flames Restaurant in San Jose.
