Norma Louise Roy

Feb. 17, 1935 - Sept. 12, 2011

Long Barn resident Norma Louise Roy died Sept. 12 at her home. She was 76.

Born in Sanford, N.C., to Vestal and Ruby Thomas, she worked as an accountant for Empire Broadcasting Co. in San Jose.

She lived in her home in Long Barn for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed skiing, playing pool and darts, reading, watching soap operas, visiting Maui, which she would visit as often as she could, being in the Sierra Mountains and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children Raymond Roy, of Long Barn, William and Ronald Roy, both of Crystal Falls, Randell Roy, of San Jose, and Kimberly Dollarhide-Roy, of Twain Harte; grandchildren, Justine Dollarhide and Jason Roy, both of Oregon, Wesley and Zachary Dollarhide, both of Long Barn, Erica Roy, of Palo Alto, Crystal and Trisha Roy, both of Fresno, Morgan and Matthew Roy, of Palm Springs, and Randell Jr. and Nicole Roy, both of Modesto; sister, Carolyn Scanio, of Florida; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Roy; and siblings, Betty Davis and Mary Hurley. A private service is scheduled for a later date.

Remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370.

Carol Ann Smales

Sept. 10, 1939 - Sept. 13, 2011

Carol Ann Smales died Tuesday at her home in Jamestown. She was 72.

Born in Salinas to William Thomas and Olive Mae Smales, she and her brother were raised near San Francisco.

She went on to raise her own family in the East Bay, where she was active in Girl Scouts and community activities.

She later moved to Middletown, where she work in the financial industry in San Francisco and Middletown.

In 2005, she and her partner, Richard Scott, moved to Jamestown to be closer to her children, who were living in Sonora.

While living in Jamestown, she became a member of Camping Women, the Red Hat Society and the Newcomers Club. She was also a docent at Railtown 1897 Historic State Park.

She enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, camping, gardening, reading and cooking.

She is survived by her children, Linda Scott, of Sonora, and Nanci Strange, of France.

A celebration of life has already been held.

The Neptune Society of Central California in Modesto is handling arrangements.

Layton Roseland

April 16, 1943 - Sept. 12, 2011

Jamestown resident Layton Roseland died Sept. 12 at Casa Viejos Assisted Living in Jamestown. He was 68.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., to Gladys King and Lloyd Roseland, he worked as a heavy construction inspector for 25 years.

He lived in Tuolumne County for 17 years.

He enjoyed walking and hiking in the mountains.

Mr. Roseland is survived by his wife, Rosemary Roseland, of Jamestown; mother, Gladys King, of Port Orchard, Wash.; children and their spouses, Sara and Travis Rider, and Emily and Andy Hawn, all of Sonora, and Eric and Jamie Roseland, of Sacramento; siblings, Elaine Loan and Gale Louch, both of Port Orchard, Wash., Randi Gusa, of Seattle, Wash., and Robert Roseland, of Twist, Wash.; and Bjorn and Paige Rider, and Abby and Sam Hawn, all of Sonora.

A private family service is scheduled for a later date.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.


FRANK - Cheryl T. Frank, 61, of Sonora, died Thursday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
