Nadine Ann Carne

April 7, 1933 - Sept. 2, 2011

Longtime Soulsbyville resident Nadine Ann Carne died Sept. 2 at her home. She was 78.

Born in Sonora to Walter and Barbara Kress, she was a descendant of two Tuolumne County pioneer families.

In 1948, she married Ernest Oliver Carne, who was also a descendant

of two pioneer families. The couple owned and operated Ernie Carne

Logging for more than 35 years and were active in organizations and

activities concerned about maintaining the area's forest.

She was a member of the Country Cowboy Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, camping at Kennedy Meadows and traveling.

Mrs. Carne is survived by her children and their spouses, James and

Peggy Carne, and Linda and David Townsend, all of Soulsbyville, and

John and Vicki Carne, of Atwater; grandchildren and their spouses,

Sheila DeRocher, of Jamestown, Connie and Kevin and Bobbie Carne, all

of Soulsbyville, Brenda and Doug Comer, of Columbia, Melissa Carne, of

Tuolumne, Kimberly and Chris Perez, of Modesto, Matt and Kelli Carne,

of Turlock, Brian and Casey Townsend, of Sonora, and Trevor and Kari

Townsend, of Heber City, Utah; and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her

husband of 52 years, Ernest Carne; and sister, Barbara Partridge.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Country Cowboy Church, 14888 Peaceful Valley Road, Sonora.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Joe Allen Nickles

Jan. 1, 1938 - Sept. 4, 2011

Former Groveland resident Joe Allen Nickles died Sunday at Garden City Care Center in Modesto. He was 73.

Born in Furley, Kan., to Eugene and Pauline Nickles, after

graduating from high school in Kansas he went on to marry Mree Weldon

in 1956, when he was 18 and she was 15.

The couple moved to California in 1960, where he began working on

the California Water Project. He worked underground on the construction

of the Oroville Dam, Hell Hole Reservoir, New Melones, Don Pedro and

the Hetch Hetchy dams.

He also co-managed the Iron Door Saloon in Groveland with his wife for a number of years.

The couple lived in Groveland for about 15 years.

When his wife became ill in 1997, he became her caregiver until her death in 2007. They were married 50 years.

He enjoyed working construction, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Nickles is survived by his children and their spouses, Jimmy

and Candie Nickles, of Redding, Kathy and Steve Runge, of Modesto, and

Christina Wiley, of Stevinson, Merced County; sisters, Evelyn Fiske and

Lois Mundel, both of Spokane, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Nickles.

No service is scheduled.
