Virginia Elizabeth Fouts

May 30, 1906 Dec. 29, 2002

Virginia Elizabeth (Burnham) Fouts, 96, a native of Copperopolis, died Sunday at her home in Sonora.

Mrs. Fouts was born to Alfred Lafayette "Lace" Burnham and lived on the family's 1,000-acre ranch in Copperopolis until she was 10. Her father was a deputy sheriff in Copperopolis. He attended college to become a doctor and later worked as an officer overseeing mines. His mother came to Calaveras County in a covered wagon from the Utah territory in the early 1800s and started one of the first churches in what is now Calaveritas.

When her father died, her mother moved the family to Stent, where the young Miss Burnham attended and later graduated from Stent's one-room school house. She attended Sonora High School until her junior year but had to quit school and go to work to help her family.

She met and married logger Jack Fouts, and the couple moved into a mill house in Standard. Her husband died in 1972, and Mrs. Fouts lived in the Standard home until the houses were sold and moved in the late 1970s.

She then bought a home in Sonora, where she lived until her death.

Her family said she was still chopping her own firewood when she was 90.

She was a homemaker and loved animals and gardening. She also loved attending family get-togethers.

Mrs. Fouts is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jarrold and Nola Fouts of Sonora and Merline and Carolyn Fouts of Montague, Siskiyou County; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty and Trini Mercado of Sonora, Elaine Hansen of Columbia and Virginia and Lino Marzi of Angels Camp; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Lorin Fouts.

A graveside inurnment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora 95370.
