George Wayne Frehling

Longtime San Andreas resident George Wayne Frehling died April 9 at a San Andreas hospital. He was 68.

Mr. Frehling was born in Fresno and grew up in Kerman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961 as a photographer. Mr. Frehling then returned to Kerman and settled in San Andreas in 1973.

He is survived by his children, Bethany Frehling and Amy Davidson, both of Rancho Cordova; and sisters, Shirley Spino and Geraldine McComb, both of Clovis.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at The Metropolitan, 59 Main St., San Andreas. Inurnment will be private.

Helen Mae Frontz

Longtime Sonora resident Helen Mae Frontz died April 19 at a Sonora hospital. She was 94.

Mrs. Frontz was born on a farm in Wellfleet, Neb., to William C. Meyer and Carolyne Anderson Meyer. She came to Northern California in 1938 and worked as a bookkeeper. She met George Frontz on New Year's Eve of that year and they were married on Oct. 15, 1939, in Carson City, Nev. Her husband worked on several mines in Northern California while they lived in Auburn and later moved to El Portal. Their daughter, Anita Elaine Frontz, was born in Merced on April 29, 1941.

The family moved to Richmond, so Mr. Frontz could work in the shipyards. In 1945, they moved to North Sacramento.

The Frontzes then leased a grocery store-gas station in Greenwood from 1947 to 1952. Mrs. Frontz worked in the store and was also the bookkeeper. After the lease ended, they returned to their home in North Sacramento. She worked for the state Franchise Tax Board, and later at McClellan Air Force Base as a classified accountant. When she retired from McClellan in 1977, and her husband retired from Safeway, they moved to Sonora to be close to their daughter and grandchildren. In 1979, they became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They enjoyed serving as ordinance workers in the Oakland Temple for 12 years.

Mrs. Frontz enjoyed maintaining her home, traveling, fishing, the outdoors, gardening, games and puzzles. She also enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She became a great-great-grandmother in August.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Meyer, in 1959; mother, Carolyne Meyer, in 1969; father, William C. Meyer, in 1979; and her husband, George Frontz, in 1994.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita Elaine Treat, and her husband, Leo, of Sonora; grandson, Stephen M. Cozart, and his wife, Laurie, of Danville; great-grandchildren Corey A. Milne and his wife, Emily, of Wrightwood, Kevin Milne of Washington D.C., Garrett Cozart of Pleasanton, Ryan Milne and Landon Milne, both of Wrightwood; and great-great-granddaughter, Averie Marie Milne of Wrightwood.

Visitation will be held at from 10 to 11 a.m. April 24 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 19481 Hillsdale Drive, Sonora. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

Melvyn 'Meb'

D. Martin

Sonora native and former resident Melvyn "Meb" D. Martin died April 16 at a Nampa, Idaho, hospital. He was 76.

Mr. Martin was born and raised in Sonora. He attended Sonora Elementary and Sonora High schools. Soon after graduating, he married his high school sweetheart, Ann Lundberg. They were married for 48 years. The Martins made their home in Sonora, where their three children were born and raised.

He was employed in various occupations, primarily in the logging and ranching industries. He worked operating heavy equipment, as a cowboy, and in agriculture. Preferring to be outdoors, he guided pack trips into the Emigrant Basin Wilderness Area, led snowmobile tours to Eagle Meadows, and served as a caretaker-groundskeeper at Standard Park.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse during the 1970s. In his younger years, he was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

He and his wife moved between Yerington, Nev., Sonora and Melba, Idaho, between 1980 and Ann's death in 1998. He later made his home in Melba, where he was near his daughter, Leanna, and son, Jim, and their families.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Martin, in 1998; father, Joe Martin Sr., in 1985; mother, Jessie Martin, in 1983; and sister, Aloha Sinclair, in 1993.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Debbie and Jon Abernathy of Sonora, Leanna and Doug Crimbchin of Melba, and Jim and Brigid Martin of Eagle, Idaho; grandchildren and their spouses Mike and Kendra Abernathy of Fort Collins, Colo., Zack and Lanna Abernathy of Sonora, Mandi and Jay Hart of Sonora, Jason and Ann Crimbchin of Nampa, Brent Crimbchin of Melba, Josh Crimbchin of Melba, Kyle Martin of Eagle, and Jaime Martin of Eagle; great-grandchildren JT Hart of Sonora, and Aspen Abernathy of Fort Collins; brother and sister-in-law Joe and Joyce Martin of Sonora; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary and Bob Girardi of Sonora; sister-in-law, Enid Peters of Carmichael; brother-in-law, Paul Lundberg of Lubbock, Texas; nieces and nephews, Carroll Sinclair of Sonora, David Sinclair of Jamestown, Guy Martin of Sonora, Jodie Rodriguez of Sonora, Stacey Dodge of Sonora, Sherrie Andrews of Merced, Ed Martin of Avery, Don Girardi of Green Bay, Wis., John Girardi of Walnut Creek, Robin Spalding of Carmichael, Cathy Wilkins of Rocklin, Denise Cunningham of Citrus Heights, and Dennis Pope of South Carolina.

'Chuck' Heck

San Andreas resident Charles "Chuck" Heck died April 12 at his residence. He was 50.

Mr. Heck was born in England and grew up in the San Jose area. He lived in Stockton for a few years and moved to Mountain Ranch in 1990 and San Andreas in 2007.

He is survived by his parents, Fred and Anne Heck, of San Andreas; brother, Ronald Heck of Idaho; and sisters, Karen Duby of Bradley, Diane Roe of Lincoln, and Kerri Guina of Friendswood, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 29 at Community Covenant Church in San Andreas.

Douglas Louis Pacheco

Angels Camp resident Douglas Louis Pacheco died April 20 at a San Andreas convalescent hospital. He was 56.

Mr. Pacheco was born in San Pablo, and lived in Angels Camp for one year. He was a truck driver for 20 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Wendy Pacheco of Florida, Julie Pacheco of Pinole, and Sabrina Pacheco, also of Pinole; brother, Russ Pacheco of Angels Camp; sisters, Carol Curphey of Reno, Nev., and Loretta Douglas of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Orvel K. Pahlow

Longtime Sonora resident Orvel K. Pahlow died April 14 at a Santa Cruz health care center. He was 84.

Mr. Pahlow was born in Alliance, Neb., and lived in Sonora for 28 years. He worked in auto body repair for 34 years. He was a member of Heritage Christian Church of Sonora and enjoyed fishing.

Mr. Pahlow was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Pahlow, in 2003.

He is survived by his sons, Earl Pahlow of Ben Lomond, Santa Cruz County, and Gerry Pahlow of Redding; brother, John Pahlow of Nebraska; granddaughters, Renee Pahlow of Oregon, and Colleen Pahlow of Redding; and grandson, Kenneth Pahlow of Oregon.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Heritage Christian Church in Sonora.

Ruby Edna Royal

Longtime Valley Springs resident Ruby Edna Royal died April 19 at a Sonora hospital. She was 93.

Mrs. Royal was born and grew up in Traphill, N.C. After marrying in 1932, she and her husband moved around, following farm jobs. They settled in Stockton in 1942. She moved to Valley Springs in 1984. She was a member of Mount Zion Pentecostal Church in San Andreas.

Mrs. Royal is survived by her children, Eva Mullins of Valley Springs, and Birdie Childress of Rock Springs, Wyo.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Mount Zion Pentecostal Church in San Andreas. A graveside service will follow at Lodi Memorial Park.
