Richard

'Dick' E. Cooper

Dec. 26, 1927 - Sept. 10, 2004

Richard "Dick" E. Cooper of Murphys died Sept. 10 at a Modesto care home after a long illness. He was 76.

He was born in Glen Elder, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged in 1947. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in November 1951. In 1951, he moved to Southern California and started his career at Lockheed. He had a reputation, wherever he worked, that he was a man who got things done, his family said. After retirement, he moved to Arnold. He drove the senior bus from Murphys to Angels Camp for several years.

He suffered a stroke in 1994 and moved to Murphys where he became a well-known figure driving his battery-operated wheelchair around town, his family added. He loved to park on the side of a building and watch the passing parade, his family said, and he enjoyed the town of Murphys and interacting with all the residents.

He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 29 years.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kate Cooper; a daughter, Darlene Honey of Weldon, Kern County; and grandchildren, Becky Estep of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Chuck Honey of Bakersfield.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Holman and Lori Estep.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Scout Hut on School Road and Highway 4 in Murphys.
