'Dick' E. Cooper

Richard "Dick" E. Cooper of Murphys died Sept. 10 at a Modesto care home after a long illness. He was 76.

He was born in Glen Elder, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged in 1947. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in November 1951. In 1951, he moved to Southern California and started his career at Lockheed. He had a reputation, wherever he worked, that he was a man who got things done, his family said. After retirement, he moved to Arnold. He drove the senior bus from Murphys to Angels Camp for several years.

He suffered a stroke in 1994 and moved to Murphys where he became a well-known figure driving his battery-operated wheelchair around town, his family added. He loved to park on the side of a building and watch the passing parade, his family said, and he enjoyed the town of Murphys and interacting with all the residents.

He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 29 years.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kate Cooper; a daughter, Darlene Honey of Weldon, Kern County; and grandchildren, Becky Estep of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Chuck Honey of Bakersfield.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Holman and Lori Estep.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Scout Hut on School Road and Highway 4 in Murphys.

Lakewood Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Hughson is handling arrangements.


'Dan' Henley

Aug. 14, 1930 - Sept. 9, 2004

Charles "Dan" Henley of San Andreas died Sept. 9 at a San Andreas hospital of natural causes. He was 74.

He was born in Bear Valley Ranch and grew up in the Fourth Crossing area. He graduated from Calaveras High School in 1950. He had lived in San Andreas since 2003 and was the owner of a service station.

Mr. Henley is survived by his sisters, Nadine Ruoff of Valley Springs, Mary Miller of Angels Camp and Beverly Laidet of Mokelumne Hill; and brothers, James Henley of San Andreas and Paul Henley of Lodi.

No services are scheduled.

Walter L. Jones

Sept. 6, 1919 - Sept. 9, 2004

Walter L. Jones of San Andreas died Sept. 9 at a San Andreas hospital. He was 85.

He was born in Kansas and had lived in San Andreas for seven years. He was a retired aeronautical engineer and served in the U.S. Air Force for many years.

Mr. Jones is survived by his children, Ken Jones of Murphys, Cheryl Jones of Mountain Ranch, Kandy Jaswa of Fallbrook, San Diego County, and Derek Jones of Soquel, Santa Cruz County; a sister, Edna Corene Griffen of Malibu, Los Angeles County; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held.

GEHRING Former Sonora resident Calvin C. "Cal" Gehring, 75, died Tuesday at a Bismarck, N.D., hospital. Services were to be held today in Bismarck. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery at a later date. Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck is handling arrangements.
