Jean Biggins

July 8, 1929 - July 6, 2004

Helen Jean Biggins of Jamestown died Tuesday at a Sonora hospital. She was 74.

She was born in Isle, Minn., to Joseph and Ellen Burnham. She lived on a dairy farm in Silverstar, Minn., before her family moved to Missoula, Mont., in 1935.

On Oct. 15, 1956, she married Robert F. Biggins in Superior, Mont. They first met when she worked as a waitress and he worked as a cook at the Turf Cafe. She worked as a waitress for 30 years.

She had lived in Tuolumne County since 1973. She lived in Clovis, Fresno County, for five years during the 1980s, then returned to Tuolumne County. She most recently had lived in Jamestown.

Her family said she loved to fish and, above all, being a grandmother.

She is survived by her children, Gary Schaeffer, Dixie Drury and Sharon White, all of Oregon, Mike Biggins of Illinois, Terry Biggins of San Andreas, Rick Biggins of Jamestown and Robert Biggins of Sacramento; a brother, Joseph Burnham of Montana; sisters, Alice McClure of Montana and Ruby Arends of Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Biggins; a son, Kelly Biggins, in 1989; and sisters, Violet Anderson and Dorothy Beebe.

A graveside service for family and friends is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow at Ceres Cemetery in Ceres.

Jane 'Betty' (McCartney) Hilton

June 17, 1918 - July 7, 2004

Jane "Betty" (McCartney) Hilton of Sonora died Wednesday at a Sonora care home from complications of pneumonia. She was 86.

She was born and raised in Canton, N.Y. She attended Syracuse University for three years and gra-duated from Katherine Gibbs Business School in Boston. She was recruited into a federal secretarial position prior to World War II and moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and married Dick Hilton in 1941. They lived in the Washington, D.C., area until they retired to Florida in 1975, where they lived for 15 years. They later moved to Phoenix and lived there until her husband's death on July 7, 1990. She later lived in San Jose until 1998, then moved to Sonora.

Her family said she loved to read Jane Austen books and loved crossword puzzles. She had a great sense of humor and was a sweet, nurturing person who faced life's challenges with a special, gentle strength, her family added, and she loved her family most of all.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Cavanaugh of Tucson, Ariz., Kathleen and Kyle Rice of Phoenix, and Susan and Steve Salnick of Groveland; grandchildren, Wayne Rice of Silver City, N.M., Theresa M. Arneson of Waldorf, M.D., and Valerie Rice Enderlin of Pasco, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Jesse Rice of Silver City, Casey, Aaron and Mirina Enderlin, all of Pasco, and Sarah and Kyle Arneson, both of Waldorf; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Dorothy McCartney of Westtown, Penn., and Robert and Margaret McCartney of East Melbourne, Australia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Hilton.

Services will be held in Canton at a later date.

'Ken' Roberson

March 15, 1917 - July 3, 2004

Longtime Tuolumne County resident James K. "Ken" Roberson died July 3 at a Soulsbyville care home. He was 87.

He was born and raised in Alameda County, and lived in Oakland for most of that time. He served in the U.S. Army for five years during World War II. During his military service, he married his childhood neighbor, Frances McCormick. Upon release from active duty in 1945, he returned to Oakland and resumed life with his wife and two young sons.

He purchased a partnership in the cabinet shop where he worked prior to the war. Soon after, he bought out his partner and ran a successful business until 1964, when he retired for the first time. By then his family had grown to 10 children. In 1969, he moved his family to Twain Harte. He resumed his trade, working alone out of his garage, until retiring again at age 70.

With no children left at home, he and his wife settled in Columbia for the remainder of their lives.

His family said he was a gregarious man known for his friendly nature.

Mr. Roberson is survived by his sons, Jim, Dave, John, Pete, Tom, Bill, Dan, Mark and Tim; a daughter, Jean; 14 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and numerous relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Frances; and a granddaughter, Rachel.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A further gathering for family and friends will be announced at the end of the service.

HILL Elbert Allen Hill, 80, of Long Barn died Friday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

KELLY Carol Kelly, 73, of Mi-Wuk Village died Saturday at a Modesto hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

MONTGOMERY Hurley Montgomery, 77, of Sonora died Friday at an Atwater care home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral home is handling arrangements.

PARKER Gary Parker, age unavailable, of Jamestown died Saturday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
