John William 'Bill' Airola

April 12, 1923 - June 27, 2004

Lifelong Angels Camp resident John William "Bill" Airola died Sunday at his Carson Hill ranch. He was 81.

He was born in Angels Camp and was a fourth-generation descendent of Manuel Airola, who settled in Calaveras County in the early 1860s.

He was a lifelong cattleman and served as a past president and director of the Calaveras-Tuolumne Cattlemans Association. He was a member of the Calaveras County Farm Bureau and was a charter member of the Angels Gun Club.

Mr. Airola is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances "Bette" Airola; daughter and son-in-law, Ginger and Clayton Rasmussen of Angels Camp; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Deloris Airola of Farmington and Mike and Liz Airola of Angels Camp; grandchildren, Jeff, Greg and Kyle Rasmussen of Angels Camp, Kevin Rasmussen of San Francisco, Jason Airola of Oakdale, Jenny Kroon and Steven, Justin and Tyler Airola, all of Farmington, Samantha Isenhagen of Escalon and Zachary and Matthew Airola, both of Angels Camp; great-grandchildren, Dustin Rasmussen of Sonora, Jared, Justice, Anthony, Kayley, Everett and Erika Rasmussen, all of Angels Camp, and Lori, Jake and Kelly Kroon, all of Farmington; brothers, Bob Airola of Angels Camp and Lowell Airola of Tiburon, Belvedere Tiburon County; and a sister, Beverly Curtoni of Oakdale.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calaveras County Cattlemans Association Scholarship Fund, in care of Toni Ann Fischer, 5049 Paloma Road, Valley Springs, CA 95252; Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1440 S. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607; or California Public Lands Council, 1221 H Street, Sacramento, CA 95814-1910.

Services were to be held today.

Mary Ada

Grasmuck

Dec. 12, 1942 - June 28, 2004

Longtime Arnold resident Mary Ada Grasmuck died Monday at a San Andreas hospital. She was 61.

She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and lived in Arnold for 34 years. She worked as a secretary for Ebbetts Pass Gas Service in Arnold for 18 years. She was the former owner of the Hungry Prospector Restaurant in Arnold. She was a member of Chapel in the Pines in Arnold and of the Arnold Lions Club.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Dave Engdahl of Lodi and Kathy and Aaron Sanders of Gooding, Idaho; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Pat Lafkas of New Bern, N.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Jim Beall of San Jose and Shelly and Dan Gilbuena of Fremont; and grandchildren, David and Lee Engdahl of Lodi and Jacob and Kyle Sanders of Gooding.

She was preceded in death by her husband, CJ Grasmuck, in 1999.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Buena Vista Cemetery in Murphys, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Chapel in the Pines in Arnold.

John 'Jack' Edward Potter

Dec. 13, 1917 - June 26, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident John "Jack" Edward Potter died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. He was 86.

He was born in Hilo, Hawaii, and lived in Sonora for 32 years. He worked as a truck driver for 50 years and was a member of the Teamsters Union.

His family said he enjoyed working on cars and volunteering to help others with fixing mechanical problems with their vehicles. In his younger days, he enjoyed sailing, his family added.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-46.

Mr. Potter is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Janie Potter of Brentwood, Contra Costa County, and Robert and Janet Potter of Oakdale; a daughter, Mary Katon of Sonora; grandchildren, Robert, Laura, Benjamin and Samuel Potter, Denise Newberry, Debbie McCullom and Kaleena Katon; and eight great-grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. July 17, at his home.

BAKER Ruby Ellen Baker, 80, formerly of Angels Camp, died June 20 at her Turlock home. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Chapel, 286 West Main St., in Turlock.
