Catherine LaNore Dominguez

April 22, 1974 - April 19, 2004

Former Columbia resident Catherine LaNore Dominguez died April 19 at a Carson City, Nev., hospital after a long illness. She was 29.

She was born in San Jose. She moved from Columbia to Carson City in 1988. She graduated from Western Nevada Community College in Carson City in 2002 with a degree in accounting. She worked as an accounting technician for the U.S. Geological Survey and was a member of the Catholic church.

Her family said she was an avid outdoor person. She loved to camp, fish and hunt. She also loved boating and swimming, her family added, and she was outgoing and loved people and children.

She is survived by her father, Eloy Muraira Dominguez of Carson City; her mother and stepfather, Judy A. and Rod Coyner of Carson City; a sister, Tracee A. Phenix of Carson City; a brother, Eloy G. "Guy" Dominguez Jr. and his wife, Tessa, of Sacramento; a stepbrother, Michael D. Coyner of Carson City; nephews, Timothy Phenix of Carson City and Jacob Dominguez of Sacramento; grandparents, Ed and Estolia Dominguez of Columbia; and uncles, Ed Muraira Dominguez Jr. and Ernest Muraira Dominguez both of Las Vegas, Elden Roy Dom-inguez of San Jose and Eric Arthur Dominguez of Reno, Nev.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at FitzHenry's Chapel of Faith in Carson City.

Ohlsen Jr.

Jan. 1, 1922 - April 17, 2004

Bardt H. Ohlsen Jr. of Sonora died April 17 at his home. He was 82.

He was born in San Francisco and lived in Sonora for 15 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a pilot stationed in England. On his return, he worked as a general contractor and built houses in the Bay Area and also was in charge of building out-of-state for an investment company.

His family said that he was a loving and patient gentlemen.

Mr. Ohlsen is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nonie Ohlsen of Sonora; a son, Bardt Ohlsen III of Ripon; a daughter, Jan Christina Nagey of Twain Harte; grandchildren, Ashley, Alaura and Everett Ohlsen; and a brother, Robert Ohlsen of Bellevue, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Ohlsen.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Snowshoe Brewing Company in Standard, where he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Emilienne 'Mimi' (Divet) Sura

Longtime Groveland resident Emilienne "Mimi" (Divet) Sura died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. She was 96.

She was born in Tiaret, Algeria, and lived in Groveland for 24 years. In 1910, her family moved from Algeria to Dollard, Saskatchewan, Canada, to farm wheat. In 1918, they moved to Tahiti to raise vanilla beans on a plantation.

They moved to San Francisco in 1923 where her father met William Randolph Hearst and went to work for him. She was married in 1923 and had two children. She worked at Hearst Castle as a personal maid. Four years later, she became a personal maid for movie star Lilly Damita in Hollywood just before World War II.

Her family said then she became "Mimi the Riveter" at Northrup Aircraft in Inglewood, Los Angeles County. She sailed on the Queen Mary, a military troop ship, in 1946.

After the war, she sailed to Paris. She flew in Junker 88, a German bomber at one time, to Algeria, and while there she attended an Arab tribal gathering with French diplomats.

She was a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Groveland and Big Oak Flat Rebekah Lodge.

Her hobbies included travel, ceramics and cooking.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Orval and Jackie Luckey of Graeagle, Butte County; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Paul Wollitz of Groveland; brothers, Armand Divet of Paris, Arsene Divet of Spain and Edmond Divet of Agen, France; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and four great-great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Sura.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Groveland.

Velma Ruth Carter

April 28, 1921 - April 29, 2004

Former longtime Sonora resident Velma Ruth Carter died Thursday at a Fallon, Nev., hospital. She was 83.

She was born in Crawley, Colo., to Oscar and Lovey Bagley. She moved from Laughlin, Nev., to Fallon, where she lived for eight years, five of those with her daughter and son-in-law. While in Laughlin, she worked as a clerk at a hotel and casino. She previously lived in the Sonora area for 50 years.

She also was a member of the Women of the Moose in Sonora.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Jorge Lozano of Fallon; sons, Jim Carter of Arkansas and Tom Carter of Texas; a sister, Mary Drury of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and inurnment will be held in Sonora at a later date.
