Hugh Smith

Longtime Groveland resident Hugh Smith died Tuesday at a Sonora hospital. He was 75.

He was born in Alameda and had lived in Groveland for 20 years. He worked as a motor vehicle manager for Pacific Bell, now known as SBC, for 33 years.

He was members of the East-Belt Tuolumne Masonic Lodge No. 8 and past master twice; Stockton Scottish Rite; Aahmes Shrine Temple; Tuolumne Star Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 123; Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Association; Tuolumne County Aeronautical Association; Golden Gate Navioneers; American Navion Society and past president; and Mosaic Masonic Lodge in Livermore.

He served in the U.S. Navy Air Reserves for 22 years.

His family said he was an avid pilot and built his own airplane.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Carol "Kay" Smith of Groveland; sons, Timothy Smith of Livermore and Michael Smith of Bedford, Texas; daughters, Holly Smith of Sonora and Margie Versen of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a sister, Eleanor Keith of Colfax, Placer County; grandsons, Tyler and Spencer Doyle, and Mark Versen all of Highlands Ranch and Kyle Versen of Kenosha, Wis.; granddaughters, Katie Versen of Logan, Utah, Claire Smith of Bedford, Kim Marini of Alameda, Kelly Alvey of Concord and Krissy Tunnell of Reno, Nev.

A memorial service was to be held 1 p.m. today at Groveland Evangelical Free Church.

(Danicourt) Figueroa

Former Columbia resident Hortense (Danicourt) Figueroa died Feb. 18 at a Clearwater, Fla., care center. She was 81.

She was born in Breckenridge, Minn., and her family moved to Columbia in 1936. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1941 and worked as a secretary for Vernon Dunlavy, principal of Sonora High School for one year. She was among the first to join the U.S. Navy WAVES, (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), in 1942. She served until the war was over and received a U.S. Navy Commendation Medal for her services as a code breaker. She was a petty officer first class.

She married Victor Figue- roa, who ser- ved in the U.S. Navy at that time, in Au-gust of 1945. During their lives, they have been stationed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lake Charles, La., and Madrid, Spain, for 25 years. They retired in Clearwater.

Her family said she and her husband played golf all over the world, had many golf trophies and loved line dancing.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Victor Figueroa of Clearwater; sons, Andrew of Beavercreek, Ohio, and David of Houston; a brother, Harold Danicourt of Sonora; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael in 1978.

Inurnment was held on March 8 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, San Diego County. She was given full military honors by the U.S. Navy.

Robert Duncan

Longtime Jamestown resident Robert Duncan died April 14 at a Sonora hospital. He was 91.

He was born in Schenectady, N.Y., and had lived in Jamestown for 30 years. He worked as an inspector for Caterpillar Tractor Co., in Illinois for 17 years. He was a member of the Nazarene Church and an avid drummer, his family added.

Mr. Duncan is survived by his wife, Alice "Billie" Duncan of Jamestown; a son, Ronald Duncan of Idaho; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Duncan in 2003.

No services are scheduled.
