Longtime Sonora resident Jane Marie Sherwin died Tuesday at her home. She was 74.
She was born in Kenosha, Wis., and had lived in Sonora since 1973. She worked as a registered nurse. She was known at Tuolumne General Hospital as "the fastest nurse in the West," her family said. She graduated from St. Lukes School of Nursing in Racine, Wis., on Sept. 4, 1950. She worked as a nurse at Sebastopol Palm Drive Hospital, and then in pediatrics at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
She later moved to Tuolumne County and started working at Tuolumne General Hospital in 1973. After her retirement in 1993, she worked as a nurse for Dr. Todd Stolp for more than four years.
Her family said she enjoyed traveling on the back of motorcycles with her husband, taking bus trips and caring for children.
She had a lifetime of dedicated service to her profession and family, her family said.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, George Sherwin of Sonora; sons and daughter-in-law, Christopher Sherwin and Alan and Adelaida Sherwin, all of Sonora; a daughter and son-in-law, RoseMarie and John Parkinson of Sonora; grandchildren, Clayton and Jennifer Parkinson and Vincent Sherwin; and a brother, Joseph Prestrel of Twain Harte.
No services are scheduled at her request.
