Allen 'Al' W. Jury

April 3, 1921 Feb. 1, 2004

Former longtime Sonora resident Allen "Al" W. Jury died Sunday at a Baker City, Ore., care center. He was 82.

He was born and raised in Hayward. He married his high school sweetheart, Lila Estell, in Reno, Nev., in 1941.

They moved to Oakdale and raised hogs and dairy cows. Their son Walter was born in Oakdale in 1948. They bought a ranch and moved to Sonora in 1951, where they raised hogs and dairy cows, later switching to beef cattle.

His first wife, Lila, died in 1983 of cancer.

He married his second wife, Mildred Lane, in 1984.

His family said he valued his family and loved to hunt, fish, garden and travel. They also said he loved a good horse and pie. He traveled into Oregon, Washington and Alaska each summer to fish and was always looking for the perfect ranch.

In 1988 he found and bought a ranch in the Keating Valley outside of Baker City.

His family moved from Sonora to Baker City in 2000 and ran the ranch. He and his wife enjoyed their retirement, taking Mr. Jury's role of ranch adviser seriously and being free to fish and travel, his family said.

He also enjoyed the branding get-togethers and the community potlucks and gatherings to visit and enjoy good food, his family added.

Mr. Jury is survived by his wife, Mildred Jury of Baker City; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Kitty Jury of Baker City; and grandchildren, Tom and Sara Jury, both of Keating Valley, Brian Morgan of Modesto and Mitchell and Matthew Morgan, both of Reno, Nev.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Keating Quick Response Team, in care of Gray's West & Company, P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.
