Cris Lynn Callahan-Strong of Sonora died Nov. 21 at a Sonora hospital after a long illness. She was 49.

She was born in San Mateo and lived in Sonora for seven years. She worked as a secretary for the City of Merced Parks and Recreation department for 14 years. She grew up in Mariposa and graduated from Mariposa High School. She was active in Job's Daughters.

Her family said she was a wonderful mother, wife, cook and seamstress. She loved animals and raised Irish setters, her family added.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen Strong of Sonora; sons, Noah, Stephen and Shane Strong, all of Sonora; a brother, Brian Callahan of Mariposa; stepsisters, Toni Gore of Reno, Nev., and Jeanette Heinrichs of Fresno; a half-sister, Stacey Callahan of Toulouse, France; her mother-in-law, Betty Strong of Atwater; a stepbrother, Robert Callahan of Chico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bruce and Eileen, and her stepmother, Elizabeth Callahan.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Tuolumne United Methodist Church.

Nellie Helmbold

Genevieve Nellie Helmbold of Sugar Pine died Monday at a Sonora hospital. She was 91.

She was born in Walworth, Wis., and moved with her husband, Clarence, to Sugar Pine in 1986. She was a member of the Mi-Wuk-Sugar Pine Fire Protection District's Ladies Auxiliary and Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

Her family said she enjoyed Tuolumne General Hospital Adult Day Healthcare. She loved all sports, quilting, and jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Patricia Helmbold of Sugar Pine, Robert and Karen Helmbold of Redding and Clarence "Bill" and Ann Helmbold of Evansville, Ind.; grandchildren, Christopher Helmbold of San Jose, Kevin Helmbold of Sugar Pine, Stuart Helmbold of Stent, Robert Helmbold of Redding and Dan Helmbold of Newfoundland, Canada; and her great-grandchildren, Kimberli, Cody, Kaela, Geoffrey, Gloria and Christina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Helmbold, in 1995.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Carters Cemetery.

James E. Lane Jr.

Lifelong Sonora resident James E. Lane Jr. died Sunday at a Modesto medical center. He was 80.

He was born in Oakland and lived in Sonora his entire life. He worked as a cutoff sawyer for 44 years. He was a lifetime member of AFLCIO, also known as Lumber & Sawmill Workers Union, and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

His family said he loved his family and enjoyed fishing, hunting and vegetable gardening.

Mr. Lane is survived by his wife, Alberta Lane of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Julie Lane of Sonora; a daughter and son-in-law, Marge and Stan Charotte of Modesto; a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Ted Brune of Jamestown; a grandson and his wife, Jason and Heidi Charotte of Modesto; a granddaughter, Robin Lane of Turlock; a great-granddaughter, Natalee Charotte of Modesto; and a great-grandson, Ethan Charotte of Modesto.

A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

FOWLIE John G. Fowlie, 58, of Sonora died Monday at his home. A vigil service is scheduled for 7 p.m. tomorrow at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave., in Daly City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Church, Santa Rosa Avenue and Alemany Boulevard in San Francisco. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. Duggan's Serra Mortuary in Daly City is handling arrangements.
