Longtime resident Flavin dead at 78

Longtime Tuolumne County resident George Truman Flavin died Tuesday at a Modesto care home. He was 78.

He was born in Eureka, Nev., and had lived in Sierra Village and Sonora since 1961. He was raised in Oakland since age 5. He graduated from Castlemont High School and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. He helped load the plane that carried the atom bombs to Japan.

He started his accounting career at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. He moved to Sierra Village in 1961 where he started, owned and operated his bookkeeping and tax preparation business, Flavin & Associates, until his retirement in 2000. The business still operates and is owned by his children.

He was an active member of American Legion Post No. 681 in Twain Harte and the Sierra Professional Association. He was a founding member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and California Society of Enrolled Agents, Big Valley Chapter.

He served on the board of trustees at Twain Harte Elementary School and Summerville High School at one time, and also served on the Tuolumne County Grand Jury.

His family said he enjoyed reading and was well known and respected throughout Tuolumne County.

Mr. Flavin is survived by his wife of 54 years, LaVonne Flavin of Sonora; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Matthew Ferrell of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Tiffany Flavin of Sonora; four grandchildren, Kele LaNier, Coby Ferrell, and Trevor and Tristan Flavin, all of Sonora; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Flavin of San Lorenzo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Flavin.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 24176 Pine Lake Drive, in Sugar Pine.

Mary E. Armstrong

Sept. 21, 1911 Nov. 20, 2003

Mary E. Armstrong of Sonora died Nov. 20 at a Sonora care home. She was 92.

She was born in Fargo, N.D., and lived in Sonora for six years. She previously had lived in San Francisco for 30 years. She worked as a secretary for the Army Corps of Engineers in San Francisco for many years. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star in San Francisco for 50 years.

She is survived by her stepson and daughter-in-law, Dave and Rosemary Armstrong of Pine Mountain Lake; and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Armstrong, in 1993.

No services are scheduled.

John R. Dorn

June 22, 1940 Nov. 24, 2003

John R. Dorn of Sonora died Monday at his home. He was 63.

Mr. Dorn was born in Oakland and grew up in Orinda, but lived most of his adult life in the Los Gatos and San Jose areas. After being a stock broker for nearly 20 years, he opened Beardsley's Catering with his wife. He moved to the Sonora area 10 years ago to follow his dream of living a simple life, his family said. He opened a small computer business and provided Internet access in Sonora.

His family said he was a big-hearted friend to all who knew him and was always the one who would lend a hand.

His daughter was the light of his life, his family added.

Mr. Dorn is survived by his daughter, Monica Helen Dorn; mother, Virginia Alice Dorn; former wife, Rosemary Beardsley; brother and sister-in-law, Michael Raymond and Doris Dorn; niece, Alyssa Dorn; nephew, Nicholas Dorn; and adopted nieces and nephews, Andrew, Kelly and Laura Barham.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

Loren Paul Palm

Aug. 21, 1942 Nov. 7, 2003

Former Sugar Pine resident Loren Paul Palm died Friday, Nov. 7, at a Conyers, Ga., care home. He was 61.

He was born in South Dakota and lived in Sugar Pine with his family for 19 years, where he made a living installing and selling floors. He moved with his family to Conyers, Ga., in 1994. He was a member of Victory Tabernacle Church in Conyers.

Mr. Palm is survived by his wife of 33 years, Karen Palm; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy Marie and Kevin Frazer of Covington, Ga.; a son, Mark Andrew Palm of Boynton Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Natalie and Anna Frazer; a brother, Don Palm of California; and sisters, Lois Ryland of Washington, Verlaine Lazzaro of California, and Mary Ellen Economy of Utah.

Services were held.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Karen Palm for her health ministry, 373 Covered Bridge Rd., Covington, GA 30016.

The National Cremation Society in Atlanta is handling arrangements.

Margery L.

Livingston

Aug. 18, 1918 Nov. 25, 2003

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Margery L. Livingston died Tuesday at her home. She was 85.

She was born in Alhambra and lived in Tuolumne County for 55 years, most recently in Jamestown. She worked as an admission clerk for Sonora Community Hospital for three years.

Her family said she enjoyed her home, traveling and especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bob Livingston of Jamestown; sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Sue Livingston of Columbia and Bill and Diane Livingston of Sonora; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Larry Benefield of Dixon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

At her request, no services will be held.

A rosary will follow and is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at the chapel. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Murphys. TURNER Vernon Turner, 77, of Sonora died yesterday at his home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

WHITESIDE A graveside service for Judith "Tomlin" Whiteside, 57, of Tuttletown is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. She died Tuesday at her home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

MENDENCE Clara Mendence, 76, of Murphys died Tuesday at a San Andreas hospital. A service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Foothill Community Church in Angels Camp. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
