Charles Harry Cardwell

Longtime Sonora resident Charles Harry Cardwell died Tuesday at his home. He was 84.

He was born in San Diego and had lived in Sonora since 1962.

He graduated from high school in San Diego and from the New Mexico School of Mines. He worked as a mining engineer for 40 years and managed the Sonora Lime Kiln mine and the Columbia Marble Quarry, from which he retired in 1983.

He served as a sergeant with the National Guard's 251st Anti-Aircraft Battalion in San Diego and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

He later served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Sonora Smoke Polers for 25 years and loved black powder shooting, his family said.

He was a past member of the Sonora Rotary Club and spent summers in Dardanelle and San Simeon State Park.

His family said he enjoyed fishing and loved animals, especially his dog.

Mr. Cardwell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lillian of Sonora; sons and daughter-in-law, Tom and Nancy Cardwell of Valley Home and Brian Cardwell of Sonora; daughter, Karen Cardwell of Sonora; and a granddaughter, Chelsea Cardwell of Lodi.

A chapel service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home in Sonora. Burial will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

Philip H. Cain

Longtime Calaveras County resident Philip H. Cain died Oct. 21 at his home. He was 82.

He was born in San Francisco and lived in the Burson area. He had lived in Calaveras County since 1953.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a charter member and organizer of the National Reined Cowhorse Association. He trained horses, was a horse-show judge and a breeder of angus cattle.

His family said he was most active in community affairs with the county government.

Mr. Cain is survived by his wife, Hazel Cain; a brother, Charles P. Cain Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held today.

TUCKER A graveside service for Ronda D. Tucker, 23, of Sonora is scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sonora. She died unexpectedly Oct. 13 in Jamestown. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
