Obituaries for April 22, 2003


Wallace Gordon Wolverton, 80, of Columbia died April 14 at his home.

Mr. Wolverton was born in Union, Miss., and had lived in Columbia for the past 56 years.

He joined the Navy when he was 20, and served on the USS Rixey from 1942-46.

He was a private contractor for 20 years and had worked for George Reed for 20 years.

As a construction supervisor, he was involved in many projects, including restoration work in Columbia State History Park, Mount Diablo State Park and Folsom Prison's license-plate building.

He also helped build Long Barn School, Sonora Inn Motel, the former Union Democrat building, Tuolumne County Library, the telephone exchange building and the Sears Catalog Store in Sonora.

He worked on many subdivisions, including Copper Cove and Rancho Calaveras, and built the Moccasin brood ponds and Hot Springs fish hatchery.

He was 10-year member of Columbia Elementary School board of trustees, a 25-year member of Sonora Elks Lodge and a charter member of Columbia Design Review Committee.

He was a pilot and owned a small airplane, loved to golf and watch his grandchildren play sports and play in the band.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Alice Grant Wolverton, in 1996, an infant daughter, Catherine, and a brother, Royce Wolverton.

Mr. Wolverton is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Wolverton and Brian and Glinda Wolverton, all of Columbia; four grandchildren, Jesse Wolverton of Sacramento, and Dylan Wolverton, Eli Wolverton and Tessa Wolverton, all of Columbia; a sister, Faye Woods of Madison, Miss.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a friend, Judi Beard of Columbia.

At his request, there will be no funeral. A private family graveside service will be held at Columbia City Cemetery.
