Eric L. Griffith

June 21, 1981 - March 28, 2003

Former Jamestown resident Eric L. Griffith died Friday at his Sonora home. He was 21.

Mr. Griffith was born in Palm Springs. He had lived in Jamestown for nine years before recently moving to Sonora.

He worked as a seasonal wildland firefighter for three seasons with the U.S. Forest Service and 1 1/2 years with the Stanislaus Hotshots. His father said he attended Columbia College in the off-seasons pursuing an education toward a career in firefighting.

Mr. Griffith's father said he loved life and loved his many friends. He loved the outdoors, watersports, snowboarding and computers.

Mr. Griffith is survived by his father, David Griffith of Jamestown; mother, Sherry Martin of Yucca Valley; sister, Vanessa Griffith of Yucca Valley; grandmother, Marie Griffith of Indio; and grandparents, Richard and Nancy Wood of Yucca Valley.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. tomorrow at Heuton Memorial Chapel in Sonora, followed by a celebration of life service to begin at 11 a.m. at the chapel.

Disposition was by cremation. A memorial fund is being set up at Central Sierra Bank in Jamestown.

Maynard Avery Segale

April 20, 1910 - March 31, 2003

Longtime Arnold resident Maynard Avery Segale died Monday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 92.

Mr. Segale was born in Murphys and lived in Arnold the past 38 years.

He was the former co-owner of Delta Rubber Company in Stockton for 38 years.

He was a member of Ophir Bear Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 33 in Murphys; Scottish Rite Bodies and Ben Ali Shrine in Stockton; Native Sons of the Golden West in Murphys; Loyal Order of the Moose in Arnold; Angels Gun Club in Angels Camp; and Stockton-Waterloo Gun and Bocci Club in Stockton.

Mr. Segale is survived by his wife, Eileen Segale of Arnold; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Harrison T. Segale, in 1984.

Visitation will be held from 1-6 p.m. tomorrow at Angels Memorial Chapel in Angels Camp.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial will follow at Buena Vista Cemetery in Murphys.

Remembrances may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children, 1701 19th Ave., San Francisco 94122.

John H. Wallace

July 26, 1918 - March 31, 2003

Longtime Columbia resident John H. Wallace died Monday at a Modesto hospital. He was 84.

Mr. Wallace was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He lived in Columbia since 1927.

He worked as a carpenter for 25 years with George Reed Inc. of Sonora; as a miner for 13 years with U.S. Lime at its facility on Lime Kiln Road; and five years for Columbia State Historic Park, where he performed restoration work, including serving as foreman for the restoration of Fallon House.

Mr. Wallace was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps and was a prisoner of war for 21 months in Germany.

He loved spending time at home with family, working on cars, woodworking and fishing. He was a member of the Sonora chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Wallace is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlene Wallace of Columbia; a daughter, Susan Wallace of Columbia; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Barbara Wallace of Sonora; a brother-in-law, Fred Benton and his wife, Becky Benton, both of Vacaville; a sister-in-law, Gloria Swingle of Jackson; a niece, Sharolyn Rich of Jackson; a great-nephew, Shane Rich of Jackson; and four grandchildren, Mallory Wallace and McCall Wallace, both of Copperopolis, and Jennifer McCollough and Allison McCollough, both of Sonora.

A graveside burial will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Columbia City Cemetery.

MILLER A funeral for Mary Miller, who died Friday at a Sonora care home, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at Heuton Memorial Chapel in Sonora.

CARLETON Darlene Yvonne Carleton, 79, of Sonora died early this morning at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
