Clyde Roy Cunningham, 88, of Sonora died March 8 at a Sonora hospital.

Mr. Cunningham was born in Missouri and grew up near Sheldon, Mo. He had lived in Sonora for the past year, after living in Rancho Bernardo, San Diego County, for 20 years.

He worked his way through college on the family farm and later delivered ice by horse-drawn wagon in Carthage, Mo. He earned three degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He earned a doctorate in agricultural economics in 1953.

He retired professor emeritus in 1973, after a 28-year career that included the University of Missouri and the University of Michigan.

Mr. Cunningham's career began with the University of Missouri and the Department of Agriculture as a county extension agent. He and his brother, Jack, had also owned two ice manufacturing and cold storage businesses in Sedalia, Mo.

He served several terms as a city councilman and mayor pro-tem of Columbia, Mo.

After he retired, he worked at the state Legislature in Jefferson City, Mo., as a spokesman for the Missouri Retail Grocers Association, and later served as a marketing and food distribution consultant to several large grocery chains throughout the Midwest.

He was a 32nd-degree Mason, a member of various teaching and agricultural organizations, and past president of Rancho Bernardo Seven Oaks Woodworking Club, which made hundreds of toys each year for children at Christmas. He was awarded lifetime membership by Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club last year, after more than 50 years of service to Rotary International.

His family said he loved gardening and was always willing to teach others and share his knowledge of plant life and agriculture.

Mr. Cunningham is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marialice Cunningham, of Sonora; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hal and Clarene Cunningham of Sonora and Kim and Sandy Cunningham of Oklahoma City; two grandsons, Tyler and Travis Cunningham of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Kennedi and Parker Ashton, Shane and Keri Tipton and Connor Tipton, all of Sonora; a sister, Jocie Kircher of Greencastle, Ind.; a brother, George Cunningham of Jefferson City; many nieces and nephews; and extended family, including Troy and Cori Ashton of Sonora.

A private service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at the Community Christian Church Columbarium, Jefferson City, Mo. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
