Calaveras board aims to improve veteran services

By Mike Morris, The Union Democrat

The need for improved services to Calaveras County military veterans was discussed Tuesday at the county Board of Supervisors meeting.

During a two-hour study session, county staffers went over what services are now offered, how they're funded and what areas are lacking.

Mary Sawicki, director of the county's Health and Human Services Agency, said she plans to meet Thursday with an aide to Congressman Tom McClintock, R-Granite Bay, to discuss the possibility of "telemedicine" - allowing county veterans to meet with a doctor via computer either inside their homes or a county building in San Andreas.

Because Calaveras County doesn't have a Veterans Affairs clinic, veterans must travel outside the county to places such as the VA clinic in East Sonora or other clinics in the Bay Area.

Transportation to those clinics to access medical and other services is one of the biggest obstacles facing Calaveras County veterans.

Sawicki said the county is working on securing a van that could transport area veterans to their medical appointments.
