Twain Harte Dam fix planning continues

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat /

Work continues to devise a plan to fix leaks at Twain Harte Dam, which forced the closure and draining of Twain Harte Lake early this month.

Employees of the Twain Harte Lake Association, which owns the dam, are placing survey equipment in the area to track movements in a granite dome, known as The Rock, which secures one side of the dam, according to California's dam safety agency.

The large granite slab cracked earlier this month, causing a leak near the dam's abutment.

Cracking and movement have occurred since the initial incident on Aug. 3.

"They're monitoring the movement (of the granite), looking to see if it's still moving," said Andy Mangney, the Central Region engineer for the state Department of Water Resource's Division of Dam Safety.

The division, which inspects and regulates dams for safety, is evaluating data gathered in the aftermath of the leak's discovery, Mangney said.

At the same time, the lake association will work with an engineer to come up with a viable proposal for patching the cracks in a way that prevents future leaks.

Schedules have not been discussed, however, Mangney said.
