Local pools closing

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

Summer pool hours are coming to an end this week - while the Calaveras High School pool is already closed and the Sonora High School pool is reopened after a vandalism case.

Sonora High School's pool was closed Sunday and Monday after a "substantial" amount of fecal matter was discovered in the pool early Sunday morning by pool staff, according to Eric Aitken, Tuolumne County recreation supervisor.

Because it involved the use of a bag and was put under the pool cover, it is believed to be a vandalism case, Aitken said.

A similar event also delayed the opening of Columbia Elementary School's pool to public access this summer.

Crews this week followed federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standards in super-chlorinating the Sonora pool and letting the filtration system get everything out.

Calaveras High School's pool is undergoing repairs, but is closed to the public because school is back in session.

Murphys pool is being sold and did not open to the public this summer.

The Twain Harte Pool also was closed over the summer for repairs.

All other Mother Lode pools - Columbia, Sonora, Tuolumne and Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp - remain open through the weekend.

After this weekend, they will either close or reduce hours to the public.
